It would work without it also.  "Cheap labor" extends beyond the
immigration issue anyway, with all the many imported goods we have today
that used to be manufactured here.  With more expensive goods we would
learn (relearn) not be so wasteful and would demand quality from products
so that they last (like they used to).  As for immigration's effect,
I would not be surprised if in the near future we are hard pressed
to find an American who knows how to build a house or mow grass.

Our income inequality is a direct result of all the cheap imported
and foreign labor.  We cannot survive as a nation like this for much
longer.  It's getting to the point where you're either a doctor or a
lawyer or you work at Burger King.  Every other career opportunity
is drying up for Americans.  If it can be done online or overseas,
it will be.  Hell, I remember seeing on tv an experimental McDonald's
drivethrough where the order was handled in India.  Unbelievable. 
And all these self-checkout lines.  I don't know.  I don't think we
will ever recover.
