Well, it's not all just about Linux. I use vi as my editor. That's not so much a linux thing as a unix thing, but vi is available for Win and Mac too, so it's not just Linux. But it's just always there under Linux; if it's not there for whatever reason, all hell breaks loose on the internet and pretty soon it's there again :) But anyway, vi navigation is fantastic. And that carries over to my newsreader (tin), which has similar vi navigation by default, and integrates vi itself as the newsreader's editor. >> I would not want to do without virtual desktops or X copy/paste or the >> availability of a wide assortment of window managers. > Why not show the advantage of this as you use it. I can full-screen an app and still use ctrl + left/right arrow to switch virtual desktops, if that's what you mean. > One thing I do like from many of the Window managers on Linux is the ability > to have windows "snap" to each other. What functionality would be taken over? I have a crap wheel mouse, since you can't really find simple 3-button mice any more. The wheel still works for scrolling. >> Obviously I want to do something with it, so buffer it already. > Again, to each their own, but why put something I want to drag and drop or > change the font of or otherwise modify in my clipboard? Seems absurd to me. You don't lose that ability. The select==copy is just for text. But you don't lose the ability to right-click selected text and change its font or whatever, while still being able to paste the same selected (and reformatted) text somewhere with a middle click. >> So yeah, middle-click paste. > Taking away my middle-click functionality would be nasty... Explain. >> I don't need some super middle wheel with knobby >> tires and a gyro. Just a plain old button will do thank you very much. > Right... to open links in new tabs, for example. Middle click still works fine for opening links in new tabs, while also working for pasting when in an input context such as a form field or an editor window or command line. Some apps are broken of course, and don't make use of it, but most seem to work ok.
