For me, the desktop is one of the major *draws* of Linux (or *BSD).
Not for available commercial apps, or for some newfangled way of arranging
pretty icons, or whatever the hell MS has on their mind at the moment; but
the way the X desktop suits my workflow much better than windows or mack.
I would not want to do without virtual desktops or X copy/paste or the
availability of a wide assortment of window managers.

Seriously, every time I have to go into windows for whatever reason, I
feel like I'm wearing leg irons.  What?  I have to paint, right-click,
select copy, right-click, select paste?  That SUCKS!  I painted it.
Obviously I want to do something with it, so buffer it already.  So yeah,
middle-click paste.  I don't need some super middle wheel with knobby
tires and a gyro.  Just a plain old button will do thank you very much.

Bitch about Linux being retro nineties or whatever.  The nineties were
actually the pinnacle of desktop computing design.  Ever since, it's all
been about "What can we change for no reason so we can force them to buy
something new?"  Computers certainly don't feel any faster today than
they did then.  If anything, they are slower.  And the anti-logic that's
been put into the desktop from both windoze and mack, well you can have
that shit.
