What does it mean when a map program wants access to my contacts? Here. Highly rated, wanted access to almost everything. Contacts caught my eye. I tapped that and instead of saying "Okay, I can live without contacts" it said, "needs contacts". I didnt' copy the rest of the list but why would it possibly need my contacts. It's a map program and I don't put their addresses in anyhow. Is it going to spy on me or does it assume I'll want directions to their place (as if I can't find it myself). Would you still install it, or what?

I have a Nexus 5X which has such a feature built-in. It will block all permissions by default and will show you a dialog when a certain app wants to access Contacts, Camera, etc. A lot of apps ask a lot of permissions although they won't actually use them. -- s|b

Depends on what you call expensive. I paid 287 euro for an LG Nexus X 16GB. ATM they are sold for 246 euro. Same model 32GB costs 299 euro. In 2014 I paid 348,95 euro for a (POS) Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Before that I bought a Nokia N9. I don't remember how much I paid for it exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was a lot more than 300 euro. -- s|b

It doesn't display maps, for one thing. And it doesn't search the web or do email for the rare but occasional times I'll want to do that. That I don't want to spend 250 doesn't mean I won't spend 50 or 100. And I'm not a senior. I graduated high school and college long ago.

First, I don't want to carry two things, have to charge two things, fill my pocket with two things. Second, I thought GPSes were mostly for directions. I want maps, not directions. Third, at most I'd be even, certainly not better off. >> And it doesn't search the web or do email for the rare but occasional >> times I'll want to do that. Dne 16/07/2016 v 03:03 Micky napsal(a): > > Second, I thought GPSes were mostly for directions. I want maps, not > directions. GPS as subdevice/firmware of smartphones just gives numerical position. GPS as map application uses GPS device and map/routing resources for either giving directions or just the position on map. To know position is very useful for both vector and raster maps, even if you need not directions, or they are even not possible to have. Like for the off-trail hiking and/or following raster map without any routing data. To want map application without GPS is IMHO not very wise, especially if most current smart devices do have it. -- Poutnik ( The Pilgrim, Der Wanderer ) Knowledge makes great men humble, but small men arrogant.

Poutnik has helped me in the past with GPS off-trail apps and everything he says is correct. You do NOT need cellular data for mapping *unless* you care about traffic. If traffic is your schtick, then you'll need cellular data. However, if you just want routing and location and excellent maps, all you need are two things: a. Offline map apps b. GPS Here, for example, are my Android map apps ordered from top to bottom, left to right, in the order that I use them most: http://i.cubeupload.com/ULjzhc.gif

But he was suggesting I get a non-Smart phone and a separate GPS. > >GPS as map application uses GPS device and map/routing resources >for either giving directions >or just the position on map. > >To know position is very useful for both vector and raster maps, >even if you need not directions, >or they are even not possible to have. > >Like for the off-trail hiking >and/or following raster map without any routing data. I don't do off-trail hiking anymore. I don't even do on-trail hiking until I lose some weight or stop the pain in my back (which are probalby related. ) >To want map application without GPS is IMHO not very wise, >especially if most current smart devices do have it. It's very very rare I don't know where I am, even when traveling. What I do need is a modern compass for my car. I bought one at a truck stop and gave it to my friend who died in March. He never used it and I wish his brother had offered it back to me, it or any other thing of his I could have kept as a memento. I need to either go to a good truck stop and buy one of those, or get a rear view mirror with a good compass. I bought one a couple years ago but it broke. On my way back from Kimberton... well I never told anyone about *going* to Kimberton. I should make a whole post out of it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Separate GPS is fine, but with non-smart phone it may be problematic to use. > >> To want map application without GPS is IMHO not very wise, >> especially if most current smart devices do have it. > > It's very very rare I don't know where I am, even when traveling. It is not necesserily about getting lost, but about to know exactly +/- few meters where you are. A compass usage in a car is problematic due the car iron interference and vibrations. Most of GPS smartphones do have HW compass, but even then they do not derive the heading course from it, but from GPS, what is at the car speed more reliable. -- Poutnik ( The Pilgrim, Der Wanderer ) Knowledge makes great men humble, but small men arrogant.

Some of applications offer switching from HW compass to "GPS compass" above chosen speed. -- Poutnik ( The Pilgrim, Der Wanderer ) Knowledge makes great men humble, but small men arrogant.

How correct they are is different, case dependent story.
