Separate GPS is fine,
but with non-smart phone it may be problematic to use.

It is not necesserily about getting lost,
but about to know exactly +/- few meters where you are.

A compass usage in a car is problematic
due the car iron interference and vibrations.

Most of GPS smartphones do have HW compass,
but even then they do not derive the heading course from it,
but from GPS, what is at the car speed more reliable.
