SubjectIs ASUS the first casualty of the EU battery regs?
Message-ID<116ooip$18uei$1@dont-email.me>
I am updating my EU battery review from earlier in the year, and I notice
that ASUS phones dropped out of the database in May or so.

Checking the ASUS website today in a variety of EU countries I see that
their phones are either unavailable or quietly dropped. Is anyone local
seeing them in shops?

I did note in March that their EU battery data was weird (together with
OnePlus); their rated battery capacity was less than half (2790 mAh) the
capacity of what was reported on their website (5800 mAh). Obviously, this
made the battery efficiency look very good compared to competitors.
https://rpubs.com/ithinkiam/1415197

Have ASUS decided to pull out of the EU? I can't see any official
announcement. And if they have, could it be because of the battery regs?

That was already clear in January:

I hope you understand German.

You forget that Joerge's role here is to not be helpful. He could have
included a one-sentence summary together with the german link.

I did do a search regarding asus mobile phone news and didn't see anything.

Given they've chosen to completely remove their models from the EU database
makes me think it's more than "temporary" departure from the phone market.

It's nothing to do with the EU. They are just stopping making phones
worldwide, not temporarily:

That shows me that you did not read the article. My summary that
everybody knows since January says it all, stupid.

I wouldn't say 'fine', but most of the time it suffices.

(I didn't even know ASUS made smartphones.)

It says:

"'Asus will no longer add new mobile phone models in the future':
CEO confirms no more Zenfone or ROG smartphones are coming as it
pivots to focus on AI products"

But what I'm reading is this:

"'Asus will no longer add new mobile phone models in the future':
CEO confirms no more Zenfone or ROG smartphones are coming as it
pivots to focus on going bankrupt"

To be fair, that article seems to have a similarly unrealistic view of
the market, with comments on "brand visibility" and on some magic need
to design new models just to be on the market, but that's not really
necessary, and of course a manufacturer can opt to build a brand out of
e.g. reliability and durability.
