Sigh! The point is that *anything* can die. You mentioned the phone dying. I mentioned the SD-card dying. If - as in the above scenario - your photos are on the SD-card and the SD-card dies, your photos are lost, unless you have backup. So whether or not the SD-card is encrypted is irrelevant and whether or not the phone is OK is also irrelevant. Bottom line: You need backup for (the Internal storage of) the phone *and* for the SD-card.

The data on the adoptable storage is also likely unencrypted when connected over Wi-Fi also (and, of course, as you noted, the phone is turned on and unlocked). Not just USB. Note: I never connect the phone to USB 'cuz connecting to Wi-Fi doesn't even need the phone to be anywhere near me when I want to use it.

Yes, it's encrypted (also on the Redmi, since this is the standard for most Android devices for more than 4-5 years if the manufacturer wants to license Google Play Services), no Google does not have a key. -- Arno Welzel https://arnowelzel.de

It is a card that sits in a SIM slot and can store inside 20 eSIMS,
intended to add eSIM capability to a phone that doesn't have it.

There is an incredible -- and I mean that literally. If I hadn't seen it I would not believe it -- amount of information about phones, half a dozen videos and texts just comparing two models of the same phone, for example. And your post reminded me of one I saw yesterday whhere this year's model has half the storage of last years but is 100 dollars more. He found some small advantages to this year, but 128 extra Gb is a big cost factor yet though it was less, the phone was more. And the phone I bought, only 128G. I hope I don't regret that. I coudl get it with 256 G for $200 more. I son'r uaw my phonw muxh. I can never remember numbers. I wish I could remember how much of the phone I had used. Should have written that down before changing the battery. Too much info to read. I'm glad I asked for suggestiosn here. I'll see how I feel after it comes tomorrow. BTW, I have a physical therapy appt. tomorrow so wanted to send the delivery to a locker. Amazon offerred 3, one in New Jersey where I did some browsing a month or two ago, one that was full, and nee that was not available. No apparent way to look for another. So I'm letting it go here. Theft has not been a problem (except for the one guy whose car was stolen, but none of his packages.) Another guy got married and I see Amazon boxes on his stoop all the time now. :-)

Google cloud, and any other cloud, can delete your data on just about any pretext, including their AI hallucinating that your data breached one or other (unspecified) term of service. It is also my experience that such cloud services become inaccessible unless you continually "upgrade" your software and hardware, which nowadays often means that you never end up paying for it. Cloud storage is OK for the rich, but not for ordinary folk. I now use a batch file to copy my Dropbox folder from my desktop to my laptop, from where I think it may go to the cloud, but they could stop supporting that at any time too. Same thing happened with Evernote. You just start getting used to using one of those things when it stops working, and they say you just need to move on and leave your data behind. And a few thousand bucks, of course, every month or every year or whatever. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

Public clouds have uptimes and a reliability which can *never* be matched by private solutions. Clouds are no backups! They allow to use sophisticated services and the secure and safe operation of devices. A good backup strategy is something separate. Most old users here are completely centred on their $200 devices for vital services which is not particularly intelligent. Devices are just means to access data and services. Today's philosophy of using digital services is completely different from what I read in this group. >> It is also my experience that such cloud services become inaccessible >> unless you continually "upgrade" your software and hardware, > > My 7 year old phone is my oldest OS at Android 12 and Google Drive works > just fine on it. > >> Cloud storage is OK for the rich, but not for ordinary folk. > > Yup. Jörg Lorenz, 2026-08-11 10:10: > Most old users here are completely centred on their $200 devices for > vital services which is not particularly intelligent. Devices are just > means to access data and services. Exactly - data is important, not the device. Devices can and do fail at any time. You need to make sure your data is stored in a secure way and with multiple(!) backups in case a file gets deleted or modified unintentionally and you realize this only a few weeks later when you need it. That's the reason, why I have *all* data on servers (which have of course also a backup) and use my mobile devices only as local "cache". My backups are done daily with a deduplicating tool (Borg Backup) which keeps all changes from the last 6 months without requiring a lot of extra storage for this. -- Arno Welzel https://arnowelzel.de

You can backup cloud storage as well - just synchronize Google Drive (or any other server you use) with you local computer and make a backup from that in multiple versions, so you can go back in time, if a recent backup shows missing or damaged files. And about "for the rich": Hetzner offers a private Nextcloud instance with 1 TB of storage for less than 5 EUR per month: <https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/> Using DAVx5 you can synchronize all contacts and calendar entries with that and FolderSync also includes automatic sync with Nextcloud backends for files - for example when you take a picture, this can get uploaded automatically when you are back to a WiFi network or even immediately, if your data plan is ok for that. Yes, a complete device backup would be better, but this is not possible with Android, you can only enable Google backup (without Photos etc. to save storage) which will save *some* (but not all) apps with their settings and data stored on the device. > I now use a batch file to copy my Dropbox folder from my desktop to > my laptop, from where I think it may go to the cloud, but they could > stop supporting that at any time too.
