  Sigh! The point is that *anything* can die. You mentioned the phone
dying. I mentioned the SD-card dying.

  If - as in the above scenario - your photos are on the SD-card and the
SD-card dies, your photos are lost, unless you have backup. So whether
or not the SD-card is encrypted is irrelevant and whether or not the
phone is OK is also irrelevant.

  Bottom line: You need backup for (the Internal storage of) the phone
*and* for the SD-card.
