#22231 — Stupid facebook

I unclick 'Show notifications' and force it to stop.  Nonetheless, every 
time I turn my phone on in the presence of a wifi signal it comes on and 
downloads a mess of facebook posts.  I have an app ('Startup Manager 
(free)') that claims it prevents apps from starting automatically, but 
it clearly doesn't work.  Anybody know of a good one?

Try signing out of Facebook. Especially right after you make changes to 
settings.

Wow!  Why didn't I think of that?

Given the nature of the beast, a GOOD startup manager is definitely 
needed -- preferably one that would understand which processes are 
essential for operation and which can be called up only when wanted. 
Added points if it adds a real CLOSE button that actually closes things 
rather than just making them invisible.

Or use one of the other facebook apps which isn't so 'noisy' I use fast
for facebook (though that does have ads)

No, Motorola left the choice to me, and I installed it myself.  I 
wouldn't mind disabling it instead of uninstalling it, but I can't do 
that.  I really HATE feeding in passwords, even with the a.i. keyboard, 
which is pretty good.

It's happy enough to run on my external sdcard so I'm not worried about 
the space.

What really gripes me is that I see completely different posts from my 
97 'friends' depending on whether I'm using firefox/FB on my desktop, 
ff/FB on the phone or the FB app on my phone.  The actual app is more 
convenient than the m.facebook.com site.

I'd call motorola support, but I just don't feel like spending hours on 
the phone before I get to somebody in the US with a dropout-free phone 
line who can actually understand what I want to do :-(

What makes you think this is motorola's doing? Sounds to me like FB is 
the problem...

Because other non-Motorola facebook users have NOT complained about the 
problem.  Isn't it a function of the hardware to obey the commands of 
the user?  I guess it could be google's fault too, but I'm not going to 
hold my breath until I get help from google.

BUT I found a solution by accident -- I moved a lot of apps, including 
facebook, to the external card last night.  When I turned the phone on 
this morning there were NO facebook notifications.  SCORE!

a 'greyed-out' "Move to SD card" button and Facebook is eating away some
120+MB of very precious Internal Storage of my '4GB' (read: 1.1GB to

Motorola Moto G Gen 2 with Android 5.0.2.  In the info page for each app 
there's an option 'move to sd card' which actually means that, not just 
move it from the 'phone' part of the internal memory to the 'sdcard' 
part.  All In One Toolbox allows you to do it batch-wise, but it just 
switches you to the info page for each app you selected.

I don't think you could run stuff from the card with 4.1, and you could 
run SOME stuff with 4.2 -- but it was a bitch to copy stuff from your 
computer to the sdcard.  5.0 improved stuff immensely.

I've got 8GB internal, which I'm pretty happy with -- 1.6GB still empty. 
  I would have liked 16GB and a dual sim, but that wasn't available at 
Best Buy -- on sale and I used $50 worth of accumulated points.  I 
really like the phone, and I liked the upper-tier US-based helpguy who 
worked with me to get the answering function on the phone fixed.

Another fix I found by accident -- I hadn't realized that 'phone' was an 
app and that somehow I had turned notifications off, possibly thinking 
that it was for messaging rather than actual voice-phoning.  Duh.

  4.1.1 has 'Move to SD card' capability, *if* the *app* is written to
use it.

  I have many apps on my SD card, for example all of the navigation apps
(see my response in your other thread) and some tools (App Cache
Cleaner, AppMgr III itself, DiskUsage).

  But fsck-ing Facebook is *not* moveable, so I wonder why it *is* for
you.

  AFAIK, none of the post 4.X Android versions did anything for moving
*apps* to the SD-card (of course they did fix some of the *data* (to
SD-card) problems they *introduced* in KitKat (4.4.X)).

  Anyway, if/when I feel like it, I'll 'Uninstall' (read: 'Uninstall
updates') Facebook and see if a 'new' 'Install' (read: 'Update') *will*

  I did this yesterday and it didn't change a thing (other than Facebook
occupying even *more* precious space in Internal storage).

  I.e. the 'Move to SD card' button is *still* disabled ('greyed-out').

  I give up!

  Alternative: Does anyone know of a web-browser which is 'Move to SD
card' capable?

  While I was researching the 'web-browser which can be moved to SD
card' issue (see below), I stumbled on the explanation why you (The Real
Bev) could move Facebook to the SD card on your Android 5.0.2 device,
but I can't move it on my Android 4.1.1 device.

  The reason: It's not the same app! Apparently 5.0+ has it's own
Facebook app, which is different from the app for pre-5.0+ systems.

  You can verify this by looking at the version of the Facebook app.
Yours is probably something like 3X.X.X.X.XX (maybe 37.0.0.0.88). While
mine is 46.0.0.26.153. I.e. the app for older systems has a higher
version number than the app for newer systems.

  So, one mystery solved. No solution for me, but the mystery is solved.

  Next point:

  During the same research, I found that there's a thing called
'Facebook Lite'
(<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.lite>).

  Compared to the regular Facebook app, it's not just 'Lite' but
featherweight: 3.30MB Total! (1.23MB App and 168KB Data). And no, the
decimal point is not in the wrong place and it's really KB, not MB.

  I installed it and it seems to do the basic stuff. It probably can't
do video's (which is probably an advantage instead of a limitation) and
it didn't seem to honor rotate-screen.

  I couldn't install it from the Play Store. The Play Store said "X
This app is incompatible with all of your devices.", which is strange,
because the Play Store page also says "Works on all Android phones".

  Anyway, I downloaded the APK from APKMirror and installed the app from
the APK.

  BTW, the app's name is (only) 'Lite', i.e. when trying to find it in
'Manage apps' (or whatever), it'll be under the 'L', not under the 'F'.

  Bottom line, I can 'Uninstall [updates]' Facebook and disable it and
use Facebook Lite instead. That way I free some valuable Internal
storage space.

  And now the third point:

  For the moment, I found a solution for this as well:

  Firefox is quite a bit smaller than Chrome, some 48MB versus 145MB,
and the Firefox app *can* be moved to the SD card.

  After moving it, but only using it for a bit, it was Total 47.68MB
(*6.04MB* App + 39.62MB USB storage app + 3.67MB data + 0.00B SD card
(data)).

  So Firefox takes only about 10MB of Internal storage space, compared
to 145MB for Chrome.

  N.B. The data still sits in Internal storage. Apparently this can be
(partly?) moved as well, but for the momentI didn't bother.

  Summary:

  All in all the changes from Facebook to Facebook Lite and from Chrome
to Firefox, give me quite a lot of extra Internal storage space, which I
can use for Stuff That Matters (tm).

  I hope that some of this is of use to some of the audience.

There's also 1MobileMarket when Play Store gets nasty.

Indeed.

You'd think that android would be a lot more user-friendly than it is. 
It's not like everybody has 128GB of internal memory or anything :-(  I 
wonder which group is more technologically sophisticated -- the aUsers 
or the iUsers...  My impression -- people who have either plenty of or 
little regard for money and/or don't want to learn about stuff buy 
iStuff and the rest of us buy aStuff.

There may be an element to that, but phones and tablets are
 consumer devices so all types of people but them. Don't forget,
 although you can't buy cheap Apple tat there are plenty of
 expensive Android gadgets. Can't overly generalise.


I have both an iPad and an Android phone. Anecdotally, I have
 fewer problems with the iPad - biggest issue is trying to get
 stuff off it.

ERROR.  No idea what happened, but when I turned it on this morning 
there was the flood of notifications.  I suppose putting it in airplane

For fear of sounding like Mr Spock, that is an illogical argument 
(captain ;)). Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Or, put in 
other words, just because no-one's complained about it doesn't mean it 
doesn't occur.

There is no reason why Motorola would be different to other phones, so 
the position has to be it is a problem that starts and ends with FB.

Of course not, but it's a possibility.

Each manufacturer adapts the Android it offers to its own requirements. 
  Why should there not be something in Motorola's configuration of 
Android that somehow precludes killing facebook notifications?

Given the nature of facebook, complaining about something like this is 
the equivalent of pounding sand down a rathole.

There are quite a few apps that insist on starting up each time the 
phone is turned on, but many of them honor my 'no notifications' 
selection.  It probably IS facebook's fault, but I'm hoping that 
somebody might have found a solution to the problem.
