Somebody suggested the All-In-One Toolbox. Didn't work.

Ditch the app and access facebook via the web browser?
I'm not a fan of the "every site needs an app" mentality.

Firefox seems slower and more difficult to use. I hate the way the
'bookmarks' work. I feel disloyal as hell saying that, but there it is :-(

Yeah, I use firefox on the desktop, but on the phone it's terrible,
uses 5-10x more ram than others. I use Sleipnir or the built-in browser.

I don't have any special settings and for me Facebook only *notifies* (i.e. it needs 'Show notifications' to be ticked) me that/if there are relevant posts, but does *not* start Facebook and (hence) does not download any posts. Mind you that I'm an ultralight Facebook user. I only follow a few close relatives and hardly ever post. But I fully agree with your subject line. 121 fscking MB for a brain-dead app which can't be moved to the SD card!? Give me a break! My main navigation app - i.e. something much, much more complex - is less than half that! Apparently Facebook developers are tools which either don't have any or don't know how to use them. Pffft! That feels *much* better! :-)

Why? I almost never use facebook on my phone and notifications are just
a waste of time and space. I do wonder why so many of the posts I see
via the phone never show up on my computer, but... Stupid facebook!

Hrm. Mine is 143 MB for the app, 50 MB for "external app", 24 MB for
data and 184 KB for external data. The All-in-One Toolbox offered to
move a number of apps to my sdcard, so I let it. No idea whether it's
lying or not, but the apps section of the settings menu shows facebook
running on the card.
I've got more room in the 'phone' area (2+ GB empty, yay!), but I had it
move several and didn't keep a count. No point in being more anal than
necessary :-)

I wish I understood how it profits them to annoy their product. It has
to be by design, they can hire the best and there's no reason they
shouldn't. Apparently it's mostly grownups using it now, and I guess we
have a higher tolerance for pain.
What most annoys me about it is the posts that keep coming back. And
also the posts I never see. Social Fixer worked for a while, but FB
tweaked their code and the SF guy is working on fixing SF.
Usenet works exactly right, why couldn't the assholes have just paid
attention. OTOH, usenet seems to be dying. Maybe FB is too :-(

Then I don't understand why - in your case - Facebook gets started and downloads posts. I even don't understand why Facebook downloads "a mess of posts" if/when it *does* get started. On my phone, Facebook just shows the 'home' page with *some* posts. I just did this now and if I do *not* scroll down to get more posts, Facebook has used 0.9MB of data, not really a number to get my knickers in a twist. Are you sure the 'posts' do not contain any videos (and you have 'Video play automatically' set to on)? [...]

It starts by itself and shows notifications (NOT at the app, on my
dropdown notifications screen). If I knew why/how it did it I could
stop it.

I just get the same notifications that I get at the website on my
computer -- the name and the first line or so ("Facebook -- Joe Smith
added a photo" etc.). All on the 'home' dropdown screen that
shows...uh...notifications. Facebook starts automatically when I turn
the phone on and sets itself to download notifications in spite of
previous orders. A lot of shit starts automatically that I can't stop
-- at least 1/4 of the apps that I have.

And why do so many apps claim to kill apps BUT THEY DON'T?
I'm most concerned about wasting battery on stuff I don't want. I just
want the phone to idle quietly until *I* want to use something, and I'm
willing to wait a few seconds for the something to load.
