The reason I use Google Maps on trips is that it shows current nearby services like gas, restaurants and hotels. If I decide to choose one, she talks me there. Another feature I especially like is the real time location of nearby speed traps (as entered by my fellow travelers). It has likely saved me more than once.

Google Maps works just fine sans a Google Account you know: a. Google Maps App(s) <== note the plural <https://i.postimg.cc/SKsjkwLC/maps03.jpg> b. No Google Account need exist to use the Google Maps App(s) <-- plural <https://i.postimg.cc/G2n0qDpt/settings07.jpg> c. Besides, location permission can easily be set on a per-app basis <https://i.postimg.cc/05dvXVDs/settings06.jpg> At least all this is possible on Android o I'll let the iOS users let folks know if this privacy is possible on iOS -- Posted so that others who are intelligent can attain the same privacy.

Kind of handy in areas where there is no mobile coverage for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres! :-)

To add further value to Frank's suggestion, not the "plus" (+) sign o Then note I always suggest OSMAnd~ (where you'll note the "tilde" (~). The difference is subtle, but real. o We've covered it many times, so you can find the details in the archive. -- Posted as always, to add value to Usenet threads for all to benefit.

How can any offline device give me immediate real time local traffic problem information that is input by fellow travelers and then route me around the problem if needed? (Traffic accidents, traffic backups, construction zones, speed traps, etc.) Boy how things have changed. Years ago I used those AAA route marked paper maps that came with a paper fold over Trip Tik. I just looked and was surprised to see that they still make them. Must be for the real old geezers that leave their phone turned off all the time. :-) > Kind of handy in areas where there is no mobile coverage for > hundreds or even thousands of kilometres! :-) Google Maps can route you while offline by using pre-downloaded maps but then of course there's no real time traffic coverage.

Heh. Some of us just love paper maps even if we need a magnifying glass
to use them. We did a lot of car traveling when the kids were little.
Their instructions were to get one of every map the gas stations had
when we stopped. We still have them. The kids too.
The TripTiks were useless -- we slept in the van/motorhome and bought
our food at grocery stores.
I especially like AAA's 'Indian Country' map -- it was just lovely using
it to plan and execute our driving trip around Utah. If you haven't
done that, do it soon.
Google maps etc. are definitely useful, but certainly not beloved.

My Garmin GPS (car unit, obviously) has lifetime 'traffic' via the
antenna/power cord. It's really good at telling me about heavy traffic
several seconds after I'm stuck in it. It also routed me off the
freeway and left me in the middle of a strange town with no further
instructions. We may need it, but (like the middle east) technology is
NOT our friend.
Except for the beginning of The Plague last spring I just assume that
there will always be traffic wherever I'm going (SoCal) -- then I can
get a pleasant surprise when I'm wrong.

Mostly the price is trivial, of course. I worry about The Powers That Be gaining access to/control of my financial information, but aside from that any attempt to invade my privacy is a waste of their time and money. What traffic info does google use? Same as Garmin or Magellan? Same as Sigalert? >> Except for the beginning of The Plague last spring I just assume >> that there will always be traffic wherever I'm going (SoCal) -- then >> I can get a pleasant surprise when I'm wrong. > > Even in light traffic, a traffic problem can cost you. That's why real > time info is great (IMHO). If I'm going further than nn miles I'll sometimes check google maps on my computer before I leave, but once I'm on the freeway I'm pretty much committed. I've seen sufficient congestion warnings to regard them as useless -- especially when I'm warned about a jam at the location I'm at right now traveling at 70mph. The one time I actually trusted the Garmin warning I was abandoned in the middle of a strange town as I mentioned above. Another time the Garmin told me to make a left, then a right, then a right, and then a left -- putting me back on the same street I had been traveling on WITH NO PROBLEM. And then there was the time it told me TWICE to drive off the side of the mountain to my death. I used to listen to the radio (with Sigalerts) when I went skiing. I was warned about an accident with stopped traffic at a known intersection on the mountain up ahead. When I got there perhaps half an hour later I didn't even see the usual telltale of smashed red plasticshards. No indication that there had EVER been an accident there. The radio person was clearly reading SOMETHING that had been sent to her, but it was wildly inaccurate. Perhaps google maps is more reliable. Still, I don't trust ANY of them! -- Cheers, Bev Red ship crashes into blue ship - sailors marooned.

Probably your biggest online danger of someone getting your financial info is phishing. So be careful of realistic looking bank emails. Next use a secure machine and a good password with 2 factor authentication. Online banking is probably as secure as walk-in banking. Perhaps more secure since some low paid teller isn't inspecting your million dollar account. As soon as you have a credit line, the agencies know about you. Here you can get all the details they have on you for free. It's really quite informative. >> and all the bank group's organisations. > > There is no such animal, there is just the bank. Most banks have affiliates and/or are part of larger global orgs. The point is none of us really knows where all our data is. It's often managed by third parties hired by the org we have contact with unbeknownst to us. Like you I'm also very careful with my data, but I am resigned to the fact that I'm one sloppy org's handling of my data away from having some of my personal details exposed. For example my wife's pension company has admitted that personal details of 30,000 customers had been copied and pasted onto a "public forum". Fortunately, she wasn't one of them.
