That's pretty much all they're good for. The one advantage they have over my Android phone is that the battery lasts far longer than does my phone on GPS, and the screen is larger, so, I put the ipad in my backpack when I hike to breadcrumb where I went. Other than the kids playing games and me using it to breadcrumb without sucking my phone's battery, they're pretty useless toys since Android does everything they can do, and more.

Dude, I have picked and poked among the boneyard of free Android apps, and I do not remember a single one that didn't feel like junk compared to what I'm used to on linux, which imo isn't all that great. Granted, iOS is clumsy and inconsistent and lack of filesystem access makes it useless for many traditional computing tasks, but since you can do all those on Android there's no reason to be overly concerned, right? I find Android limiting and prefer linux for actual computing, but mileage varies. iOS is not even under consideration as a computing tool, that isn't what it was built for. It was built for joe computing-illiterate citizen, and his mom, and his kids. And maybe for a few folks like me, although I do find iOS clumsy in many respects. Originally I looked at buying a MacBook because although linux has been around for decades, due to its development environment the constant thrashing makes it effectively early-beta-level code imo, and that isn't really adequate for some things. Then I thought some more about what I wanted, and that was to get email and shopping and a few other fugly office things *off* my development boxes and onto something that could be used for the fugly-office-crap and would continue working even though I might destroy the linux kernel from time to time. And the Apple devices that I have (iPad, iPhone) do a splendid job of dealing with fugly office things like keeping my calendar current on both devices etc. Sure, I could make either of my Android boxes do all that stuff, but then I'd be dependent on a lot of linux-like thrash-ware, I'd have to pick through the Android apps and configure a bunch of stuff and have almost as much fun with that bullshit as I have configuring linux. An iOS device is like one of those calculators we used to have sitting on our desks, it does a specific job, not everything. If you want the perfect box that does everything, you gotta make your own. You can not cajole Apple into making what you want, you represent zero profit while Joe Average is where the purchasing dollars are, and Apple thinks they know what Joe wants. It will be interesting to observe how Apple deals with an increasingly computer-literate demographic, but I expect iOS to remain largely as it is (though improved), and the Mac side of their offerings to be where we'll see the innovations that motivate Experienced Joe to spend money, not on the iPad and iPhone that just do their little jobs and keep working while Experienced Joe has learned to want more. -- http://totally-portable-software.blogspot.com [Sat Mar 26: "Documentation and Portability"]

I'm on Linux too. The *one* app on Android/iOS that is *better* than the same functionality on Linux, by far, is "Fing". Linux, amazingly, doesn't have the capability to *accurately* tell you all the devices that are connected to the router. I know that sounds impossible, but I've been through it on alt.os.linux and it's true. It's amazing. But a simple free app can tell you more accurately what's connected to your network than can a Linux box with root access. Other than that.... > Granted, iOS is clumsy and inconsistent and lack of filesystem access > makes it useless for many traditional computing tasks, but since you can > do all those on Android there's no reason to be overly concerned, right? > I find Android limiting and prefer linux for actual computing, but > mileage varies. iOS is not even under consideration as a computing > tool, that isn't what it was built for. What I find iOS & Android useful for is mapping, tracking, backtracking. You can't really do that on a linux laptop because it's missing native GPS. > Originally I looked at buying a MacBook because although linux has been > around for decades, due to its development environment the constant > thrashing makes it effectively early-beta-level code imo, and that isn't > really adequate for some things. Sure, we can cherry pick but overall, they're more expensive for the same thing. Plus, Apple makes decisions I would never make - so I'm fine with Kubuntu or Windows XP. Both work better, IMHO, than OSX but I have very little experience with OSX (and hated every moment of it) - so take that with a grain of NaCl. > Sure, I could make either of my Android boxes do all that stuff, but > then I'd be dependent on a lot of linux-like thrash-ware, I'd have to > pick through the Android apps and configure a bunch of stuff and have > almost as much fun with that bullshit as I have configuring linux. What a mobile device is good for is not what a laptop is good for. I wouldn't do anything on a mobile device that required sheer compute power. Nor would I do anything that requires a lot of typing. But it's good for mapping. > An iOS device is like one of those calculators we used to have sitting > on our desks, it does a specific job, not everything. I represent zero profit not only to Apple, but also to the Android stores. And to the advertisers. And to the hardware guys (since my Android phone was bought in 2012 and is working fine except that I wore out the USB connector and a few batteries). I'm the opposite of a whale. > It will be interesting to observe how Apple deals with an increasingly > computer-literate demographic, but I expect iOS to remain largely as it > is (though improved), and the Mac side of their offerings to be where > we'll see the innovations that motivate Experienced Joe to spend money, > not on the iPad and iPhone that just do their little jobs and keep > working while Experienced Joe has learned to want more. You have to admit that the average iOS user is *nothing* like what we're used to dealing with on the Windows and Linux forums. Nothing. They're mostly like the people who post on the iOS newsgroups, of which there are only three types. The oddest thing is that you only get two types on Android newsgroups. The one unique type that is odd on the iOS newsgroups are the ones who will lie and tell a mistruth and repeat that mistruth forever, simply because you ask a question that they don't like the true answer to. So they give you the answer *they* would like to give you if they were writing the marketing literature on the subject (even though the solution they decree can't possibly work for you). And the only way you know it's dead wrong is that when you try it, it can't work. Only after you try it, you realize they knew all along that it couldn't work. So they lie. It's used to be so frustrating as to *why* they lie - but I've finally figured out why, so I am no longer frustrated by their incessant lies. Other than those iOS-only oddballs, the other two types of users on iOS are the same as the two types of users on Android.

What nospam will do, and what he always does, is cherry pick the absolutely *worst* buy he can find, and *then* compare that worst choice ever, to the apple equipment. He does it every time. Just watch.

Significant productivity inhibitor imo. the correct name of the key is delete. backspace is a different character (^h) and you can thank microsoft for fucking that one up. if it bothers you, stick a label on it that says backspace. there's limited space on a laptop keyboard to have all of the extra keys that few people actually ever use. nevertheless, forward delete is available with fn-delete (which is very intuitive) or use any standard usb or bluetooth keyboard (non-apple works just fine) with whatever keys you want. if that's the biggest problem you can find with a macbook, then apple is doing just fine. > Not a big worry, doubtless MacOS lets you assign the functions you wish > to perform to specific keys... I understand that Apple thinks they were there first and anything that came later was wrong-if-different; it's an understandable viewpoint, if you ignore the fact that everybody wants their stuff to be better than the next guy so they make it different on purpose. And it is possible to delete text with only a backspace function, though not all iOS input fields support the magnified cursor or even let you poke the field to move the cursor from the end of the field, thus making it necessary to retype the whole whatever if you discover a typo in the first part. The spotty support shows the iOS user-interface to be poorly designed; all that stuff belongs in common system routines that are shared across the board. They'll get around to fixing that later, no drama. > > if it bothers you, stick a label on it that says backspace. Great, where does that leave the forward-delete funtion? Absent by default. People who do a lot of writing benefit greatly from having a moveable cursor and the ability to delete from the cursor in either direction. Frankly I don't care that Apple prefers to stick with what they invented in early days when the teletype keyboard was the industry standard. I can make the gizmo work. > > there's limited space on a laptop keyboard to have all of the extra > keys that few people actually ever use. > > nevertheless, forward delete is available with fn-delete (which is very > intuitive) That's good information, thank you. It's not intuitive to me what any of the "special?" keys on the bottom row do, and I haven't yet sought out that piece of documentation. Nor have I yet accustomed myself to the concept of "just trying" some of the icons that apps offer up and provide no clue about what they mean; too many years of being in a situation where "just trying" something could toast your system gives a fellow reason for caution, or maybe just bad habits. > or use any standard usb or bluetooth keyboard (non-apple > works just fine) with whatever keys you want. > > if that's the biggest problem you can find with a macbook, then apple > is doing just fine.
