Might that be the "Turn off" option when viewing an app using the Application Manager? I saw that option for several Google apps.

The best I can do is revert to the version that came with the phone.
Not a big improvement.

I'm especially pissed about Facebook -- If you kill it deliberately it (and its Messenger sibling) it starts up again all by itself in a little while. Moreover, it can't be disabled, just uninstalled. I want to use it occasionally and don't want to lose my settings, but it's annoying anyway. That seems to be the only one that autostarts and I'd really like to be able to defeat that. -- Cheers, Bev

I have downgraded FB to original version and than disabled it, wiping out its data on Sony Xperia M Dual with A4.2/4.3. As it was one of the most bloated app on my 4GB device and wanted even extra FB messanger for chat. Much later I have installed FB lite, having few MB, covering chat as well, having FB still disabled.

It's no substitute because of the way I separate my friends into groups, and it insists on installing itself on internal memory rather than the SD card. Every app does that - at least on pre-6 - but - as I said - Facebook Lite is only 3MB, so who cares? > Those may have been why I uninstalled it long ago. Well, I guess one reason is enough.

I guess I'm lucky - Facebook was not installed on my Tracfone LG phone. I'm not a Facebook user, so I would have wanted to get rid of it anyway. I just looked up "Facebook Lite", and Google Play Store tells me it's incompatible with my devices. Not sure what that's about, but it matters not.

I read surprisingly good things about Outlook, especially considering how lame most of their other email clients are. I understand they bought some other already-developed product and slapped their brand on it, I look forward to checking it out. I have Gmail on my phone, but have never used it and it's currently disabled. I may try it out now, though I'm put off by the fact that it displays ads. I've thought about installing the Xfinity app, but the main thing I'd use it for, to check voice mail, I already do through their web page. Thanks for your thoughts, especially for the thumbs-up for Outlook.

They will ruin it, soon :) No doubt! Actually, now that I look closer, reviews aren't as glowing as I thought. Looks like Outlook still needs work. And it includes a calender component that I'm not interested in. I may still check it out, though.

Nil wrote: > I've thought about installing the Xfinity app, but the main thing I'd > use it for, to check voice mail, I already do through their web page. Tried using the web browsers - any of them - on a smartphone? Sucks. That's why apps showed up to replace using a web browser. For example, I could look at an online copy of my OneNote notes but the UI is far more touchscreen tailored using the OneNote app. > Thanks for your thoughts, especially for the thumbs-up for Outlook. There is (or was) a problem using the Outlook app: omitting the References header in replies. That is what gets used to thread together a discussion consisting of replies where some are to different participants. With References, you can build a hierarchy of replies to sort them into [sub]threads. Without it, every reply looks like a whole new discussion. I've seen users communicating with each other and the threading is great so you can tell who said what to whom. Then someone joined that was using the Outlook app and they started a new thread instead of replying into an existing one like they meant to do. The problem with writing apps to supplement the full robust desktop clients is that the dev community writing apps does not have the history of the devs on the legacy desktop program. They write a new app and don't have the same experience as those that coded the desktop program. So you end up with gaps in functionality. Another reason is trying to keep the apps small. You cannot include all features in a robust desktop program to fit inside an small app. Sacrifices are made. However, I doubt omission of the References header was a sacrificial choice. I think it was due to ignorance of new devs not having the same level of acquired experience to understand the e-mail protocols. UPDATE: I just did a test and the Outlook app does now include the References header in replies composed using the Outlook app. So Microsoft got around to fixing this screw up. However, since there is simply less code in the app, it cannot do everything the desktop program can do. Just try to define rules to filter incoming e-mail. Not there in the app. Apps are okay but they definitely don't replace the desktop versions. However, they often have been touch navigation than trying to use the crippled web browsers on a smartphone.
