Tried using the web browsers - any of them - on a smartphone?  Sucks.
That's why apps showed up to replace using a web browser.  For example,
I could look at an online copy of my OneNote notes but the UI is far
more touchscreen tailored using the OneNote app.

There is (or was) a problem using the Outlook app: omitting the
References header in replies.  That is what gets used to thread together
a discussion consisting of replies where some are to different
participants.  With References, you can build a hierarchy of replies to
sort them into [sub]threads.  Without it, every reply looks like a whole
new discussion.

I've seen users communicating with each other and the threading is great
so you can tell who said what to whom.  Then someone joined that was
using the Outlook app and they started a new thread instead of replying
into an existing one like they meant to do.

The problem with writing apps to supplement the full robust desktop
clients is that the dev community writing apps does not have the history
of the devs on the legacy desktop program.  They write a new app and
don't have the same experience as those that coded the desktop program.
So you end up with gaps in functionality.  Another reason is trying to
keep the apps small.  You cannot include all features in a robust
desktop program to fit inside an small app.  Sacrifices are made.  

However, I doubt omission of the References header was a sacrificial
choice.  I think it was due to ignorance of new devs not having the same
level of acquired experience to understand the e-mail protocols.

UPDATE: I just did a test and the Outlook app does now include the
References header in replies composed using the Outlook app.  So
Microsoft got around to fixing this screw up.  However, since there is
simply less code in the app, it cannot do everything the desktop program
can do.  Just try to define rules to filter incoming e-mail.  Not there
in the app.  Apps are okay but they definitely don't replace the desktop
versions.  However, they often have been touch navigation than trying to
use the crippled web browsers on a smartphone.
