#22396 — Off-line mapping apps

I've tried OSMand 2.1.1  and Copilot 9.6.2.957.  I've downloaded 
appropriate maps.  What I want to do is find a route to Zion National 
Park or Zion Canyon or Zion Utah or any combination thereof.  Zip. 
Nothing.  Clearly I'm doing something wrong, but I can't even find help 
functions.  They find local gas stations, etc. and that's quite nice, 
but I want to find routes to distant  locations without city or street 
names when I have no wifi access to google maps, which does what I want 
just fine -- but not out in the middle of nowhere.  That's what I hoped 
OSMand and CoPilot would do, and I seem to remember that at some time in 
the past they actually did.

I don't like relying on the Garmin -- when I wanted to do the above 
search, it didn't find Zion unless I added 'Visitor Center' and routed 
me to a nearby town which was WRONG.  Looks like these aren't reliable 
either.

Anything new in the last 6 months?

Dunno. I use Nokia's 'Where' navigation App (which they're about to sell 
to one of the car makers). That lets you download maps for off-line use 
but, even so, the location search facilities are very limited unless you 
have an internet connection.

SYCIG has such an app. I have it on my phone and it seems fine but I
usually use google maps because that's what I'm used to.  Search Sygic
in the play store and you'll find it.

Just installed it, along with 5 state maps.  It immediately found zion 
canyon when I told it to search Utah.  SCORE!

I had this a long time ago and can't remember why I deleted it...

  Perhaps because you didn't pay for it (read: the map(s)) and it
expired (read: became effectively non-functional) after 7 days? Maybe a
re-installation just gives you another 7-day trial (I don't know, never
tried.). Just 'guessing'.

My copy still works fine after months. It just doesn't talk to give me 
directions. I have to watch it to know when to turn.

Not that big a problem -- I just want a belt+suspenders check for the 
Garmin :-)  My Rand McNally road atlas doesn't talk either.

FWIW, the Garmin is stupid.  It wants the address ordered 
state/number/street/city and takes a godawful long time to search for a 
city with that number and street.  Maybe the update (which I have to use 
the windows machine for) will fix that -- I think my previous Garmin 
(the one that tried to kill me TWICE) did it the right way.

  And, at least for me, it also does not give any visible information
about *upcoming* actions. It only shows the arrow 'in' the road, but for
example there's no panel with an arrow which indicates to turn left in
500 meters.

  Also it does not give map updates. You can re-download maps, but
there's no indication whether or not these maps are newer than the ones
you had.

  But indeed, the expired app still provides some minimal functionality.
That is why I keep it on my device in case my other - mainly OSM-based
- apps fail me (i.e. some road is not on the OSM map(s)).

  It's not really obvious, but not that hard:

  -> Search for -> Address -> if needed, tap on 'Region' and select the
region (probably US or Utah) -> tap on 'City' -> enter city (Zion) ->
sometimes a 'Search more villages/postcode' is needed -> select the city
->

  Now you'll get a search for the street, but because you don't
know/want the/a street, you tap the back-button (twice).

  Now you're back on the "ADDRESS" page. On the bottom of that page is
the directions icon (and the other familiar icons (Destination point/
Waypoint, Show on map ,Favorite)).

  The directions will guide you to the centre of the town in question.

  But seriously, OsmAnd's UI sucks big time, especially since the last
big overhaul, but it's still my preferred OSM app, especially because of
the very frequent - compared to other OSM apps - map updates.

Oh.  TWICE.  Wait, I think that got me completely out.  I'll try again, 
but I never saw a 'Region' thing, just 'United States' and couldn't see 
the state name until I did something else.

Not at all intuitive.  I hate multi-level hierarchies and trying to 
guess where some stranger thought would be a good place to hide something.

Does Sygic give you 30 days or so for free and then demand money?  That 
may have been why I dumped it before...  I don't do free trials, 
especially when I don't know that it's just a trial.

I think it's 7 days. Then it quits talking, but otherwise works. It does still 
say "you are there" though.

It found Zion Lodge and then some trail/features, so I selected one of 
those.  Fumbled around to add it to 'favorites'.  NOT intuitive :-(

Using OsmAnd, I've found that finding places works best (or least badly)
when they are near the 'current map centre'.  Once you've got the exact
location on the map add it to your 'favourites' so that you can find it
later eg when you actually want to find your way there.  OsmAnd is also
slow to find out where you are - I find it helps to have GPS running all
the time even when you aren't using maps or navigation.  That may be
associated with particular hardware though.
