Seconded, trivial download.

Without playing it and without Flash or script?
Just a direct download? What do you use?

youtube hasn't needed flash for nearly a decade.

the video does start to play (as does any youtube video), but it's easy
to click stop and then click the download button, which is via a
browser extension.

there are quite a few youtube download extensions for all of the
current popular browsers, typically offering a choice of sizes (up to
the size that was uploaded), choice of formats (usually flv or mp4,
sometimes additional formats) and even just the audio track.

here's a screenshot of one such extension

As I said, I don't want it to play. I don't want it
to load. I don't want to enable script or install Flash.
I don't want any video running in the browser. There
are more options for download if one doesn't mind
starting the video, but I'm only interested in things
that will actually provide the direct download.

you never watch videos in a browser? ever?

No. We've gone through this before. I disable
script wherever possible for security and privacy.
(Currently there's one site where I have to enable
it, which is Netflix.) Second, I don't like having sound,
movement, or other unexpected changes in webpages.
Usually I'm trying to read something. I don't want it
to turn into TV or some kind of shopping mall, neon
cacaphony. That's distracting. Third, in most
cases if I want a video (or mp3 or PDF) at all then
I'll want a copy. For instance, I sometimes download
Youtube videos for guidance in repairing my truck.
PDFs I download are usually for reference. So I want
the file and there's no need to risk security or complicate
things by loading it in the browser. I'll play it in VLC or
read PDFs in my choice of PDF reader.

I know you think script is not a problem. And
apparently you don't mind having things jump around,
pop up, pop under, animate, slideshow, or sing on
webpages you visit. That's your choice. It wasn't
what I asked about. I asked about download options
without script. I expect there must be other people
who have similar priorities.

The Keepvid site actually works quite well, no script
required. That's a resource I wasn't aware of. I'll have
to try it next time I want a Vimeo video. In the past I've
just used Download Helper FF extension, which has worked
fine with Youtube script-free, but doesn't seem to work
with any other sites.

that does very little for security and nothing for privacy.

oh no! how can you sleep at night?? you might get pwned.

surprising as it may seem, when you visit youtube.com, it's expected
that there will be sound and movement.

what sites do you read that turn into a neon cacophony? or are you
making up shit again?

> Third, in most

you have to watch at least a little bit to know if it's worth
downloading.

or do you download every single video link and add them all to your
playlist?

there is no security risk in watching a youtube video in a browser and
certainly not reading a pdf.

where do you come up with this shit?

> I know you think script is not a problem.

it isn't.

furthermore, disabling javascript means that the majority of web sites
will not work properly or at all. *that* is a problem.

> And
> apparently you don't mind having things jump around,

you should stop visiting porn sites, which are the ones that generally
do that.

normal sites don't do any of that.

there aren't.

what happened to your claim of not needing specialized apps when you
can just use a browser?

In Firefox there are several Add-ons available that put on-off buttons
on the tool bar. I have buttons for Java, Javascript, images, etc. (You
choose which buttons you want.) If I want a quiet motionless text screen
(for newspapers) I turn off the appropriate buttons. (The JS button
usually does the trick for that.) Likewise if I want to watch a video, a
button push or two and reload. Easy Peasy. (Dunno about the other
browsers.)

| In Firefox there are several Add-ons available that put on-off buttons

Thanks. I actually use two browsers lately. FF has
script enabled with NoScript. Frames enabled. 3rd-party
files enabled. Session cookies deleted when FF closes.
Pale Moon has all disabled and I use that for most
things. Buttons are a good idea, though. There should
have been buttons for script years ago. Instead the
browser makers have made it *more* difficult to adjust,
with Mozilla hiding the setting while IE requires a
handful of obscure and hidden security options being
toggled. I'd guess not 1 person in 200 knows what
it means to enable "Script ActiveX controls not marked
as safe".

One thing I find I'm doing more lately is disabling
CSS: View -> Page Style -> No Style. Some sites are just
very badly designed. Others seem to depend on script to
sniff devices and now default to mobile. (At least that's
my theory.) Example: washingtonpost.com. The front page
is OK, but when I click on a story I get giant text with
triple-height line spacing. It's so big that it's often easier
to read 1995-style, with no CSS and my own default of
13px Verdana. It'd be nice to have a quickie CSS toggle on
the toobar.

I have my own CSS file to override some sites. For whatever reason Google
News does not show visited links, for example, so I added that to my CSS
file.

I don't know what nospam used on iOS, but on Android, I tested your kind
suggestion using the free experimental "New Pipe" (org.schabi.newpipe)
YouTube-Red replacement app:
http://i.cubeupload.com/NYWZK0.png

All I did was type "yqhs" (all lower case) and that free experimental New
Pipe app immediately found the "YQHsXMglC9A" video:
http://cubeupload.com/im/3weTiN.png

Apparently these things are case insensitive unique names, where the
human-readable name is apparently "Adele - Hello"
http://cubeupload.com/im/6zSJtZ.png

The experimental free New Pipe Youtube-Red replacement app shows "Adele -
Hello" much like the youtube app shows the video:
http://cubeupload.com/im/GmvTiG.png

I had three choices:
a. Play the audio in the background with headphones
b. Download the audio or the video or both
c. Share with any other app I desired

The first think I did was hit the middle (download) button, which defaults
to saving the complete video to any desired location:
http://cubeupload.com/im/9Zv4cX.png

I also checked the Audio button, so that it would save both separately:
http://cubeupload.com/im/X4riyp.png

In addition, I downloaded the companion New Pipe "share with anything"
applet, just to see what it did:
http://cubeupload.com/im/iOVsjS.png

Pretty much, that New Pipe extension seemed to allow me to share the
Youtube video (or audio) with pretty much any app that I had installed on
my mobile device:
http://cubeupload.com/im/ghkCAv.png

In the New Pipe settings, I pretty much could set anything I wanted to set,
e.g., the default download directories or the format & quality, etc.:
http://cubeupload.com/im/OEzPIl.png

But, by default, the complete standalone video-with-audio went here:
/storage/emulated/0/Movies/NewPipe/Adele_Hello.webm
http://cubeupload.com/im/Zila4R.png

And the complete standalone audio went here:
/storage/emulated/0/Music/NewPipe/Adele_Hello.m4a (& Adele_Hello.m4a.giga)

Being wholly unfamiliar with a "webm" file, I tapped it and it asked me
what I wanted to play it with:
http://cubeupload.com/im/QfJMJg.png

So, I used the share method to download the file again, this time using the
ES File Explorer download helper app, which created both an "m4a" and
"giga" file in my sd card
http://cubeupload.com/im/KTHdDb.png

I decided to move the files to my SD card next to my documentaries:
http://cubeupload.com/im/9xoaMh.png

Where I maintain a well organized file system:
/extSdCard/data/audio/songs/
/extSdCard/data/video/movies/
etc.

So, while the original request was for a youtube video that played ads,
none of the tested videos played *any* ads for me, and specifically, the
tested video that you suggested had absolutely no problem downloading
simultaneously with my other test audio & video downloads:
http://cubeupload.com/im/AwlsNX.png

REQUEST:
a. If someone can find a youtube video that *always* plays ads, I would
love to test it out on the various platforms, because I *never* see ads on
some platforms (and I always see ads on other platforms).

b. If someone, like Mayayana, has trouble downloading *any* youtube video
or extracting any youtube audio, please give me the link and I will test it
out to see if I have the same problems.

I had absolutely no problem downloading the entire video and/or sharing it
with other apps and/or just extracting the audio, and, at no point in time
did I see an advertisement (I never do) on Android.

But I just saw this note which says you're only on a computer, so, now
you're stuck in a browser.

I don't usually use a browser for much (except browsing web pages, mostly
the news and Wikipedia and research) so I can't help on the youtube
downloader plugins for the browsers.

But others can, so, I'll defer to them.

But still - the main question is HOW does the AD happen?

There are YouTube shows I watch... and to make it easy for me I download
them. My network can be flakey it is easier to cue them up or stop or stop
them with a remote.

Keepvid.com has yet to fail me... though I can see the benefits not being
dependant on a website app.

Back end app that controls the playback... but I do not know the details.
