You will have to find out yourself. I don't know.

Spain. My current plan gives me 10 GB, and it gets bigger every year.
Initially it was... I'm unsure, perhaps 4GB. I have not seen unlimited
data contracts, or maybe, but expensive.
When I travelled to Canada recently I used a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card.
It was unlimited on the USA, but 4 GB in Canada. And at some places we
had no coverage at all, maybe some going upstairs.

A little condescending, I think! I don't think the UK could be considered undeveloped, where fobile moans are concerned. But I think unlimited - if that is indeed what you mean, you didn't explicitly answer - is still unusual here. Lots of contracts are for so much that they're _effectively_ unlimited, but I think ones that _actually_ are are rare (and expensive). >Our market may be expensive compared to our neighbouring countries but >*Flat Rates* are standard for years with all providers. Ah! I see! Your country does *not* have an "underdevelopped" mobile market and that's why your mobile services are *expensive*! Makes perfect sense, NOT! Countries which actually have a *sensible* market, do have plans ranging from nearly no use at all to unlimited. That's for example the case in your neighbour Germany, in our country - The Netherlands - and probably in most European countries. I.e. a user can get a plan which suits *hir* needs, instead of being forced to get an unlimited plan at high cost. So your statement "Nowadays almost everyone has a flat rate contract." is nonsense and Switzerland in probably to odd man out.

Apparently it has to do with data speeds, roaming in EU/Western Europe, calling to other countries, multiple devices, etc., etc., So apparently Joerg's "flat rate" is not so flat after all! :-) No wonder with all these mountains! N.B. It's quite humourous to note that in Joerg's non-"underdevelopped market" people have to pay extra for roaming in their neighbouring countries. No such problem in my country and - I assume - not (yet) in John's and your country.

My cheap prepaid T-Mobile account costs maybe 30 cents a minute. If I
cross into Mexico it goes up to $1.50/minute and the line is pretty damn
accurate.

I have to buy $10 worth of minutes (30, 33, something like that) once a
year to keep my ~600 minutes rolling over. I rarely use the phone, so
it's dirt cheap even at 30 cents/minute.

Who with? most mvnos. 30c/min is crazy. 10c/min is high, although not unheard of. for those visiting mexico (or elsewhere for that matter), t-mobile has a $15/mo unlimited roaming plan, which is just *ten* *minutes* at the above mexico rate, although there may be an mvno with a better mexico specific plan. <https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/international-calling> it's also possible to use voip and public wifi, but that's a bit of a hassle for anything beyond the occasional call.

It seems that nospam doesn't quite realize what "prepaid" means or can mean in our part of the world and in many (most?) parts of the world. For us, it just means that you put an amount of credit (in money) 'on' your SIM and then us that credit as you see fit. I.e. you only 'pay' (from your credit) if you actually use the service (call, text, data). I just checked the (US) T-Mobile site he pointed to and there even a prepaid 'plan' is still X$/month. So in this case, "prepaid" means exactly that, i.e. you pay beforehand instead of afterwards, but you still pay some amount per month. <https://prepaid.t-mobile.com/prepaid/marketing/prepaid-plans> In contrast, 'we' don't pay anything per month (unless we choose to). We don't pay anything for non-use besides perhaps a certain minimal use or recharge per (half) year. For example, our prepaid service is totally PAYG (Pay As You Go) with a minimum of 10ct per 6 months. I don't think nospam can come up with a comparable (i.e. no monthly cost/charge) US prepaid service at "under 5c/min typical". BTW, from The Real Bev's post, I understand that in the US 'our' kind of prepaid *is* available.

So in this case, "prepaid" means > exactly that, i.e. you pay beforehand instead of afterwards, but you > still pay some amount per month. that's what prepaid means, paying before, and t-mobile is not the only option. the term you're looking for is pay as you go, which is also sold as prepaid and is also available here. everyone has different needs, which is why there are a *lot* of mvnos, each offering something a little different from their competitors. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_mobile_virtual_netw ork_operators> the big four, at&t, verizon, sprint & t-mobile have prepaid plans, but they are not as cheap as some of the mvno offerings. t-mobile used to offer a completely free tablet data-only plan with 200 mb, sufficient for casual use. no payment information was needed to sign up, making it *impossible* to be charged any fees. however, it has been discontinued for new signups. existing customers can continue to use it. tl;dr there are a *lot* of choices.

I just measured from where I usually call to have the Mexican dentist
(Tijuana) come pick us up at a convenient spot. 600 feet from the
border. More recently (new crossing) maybe 200 feet. Hard to tell --
google earth calls the border a straight line, but the fence clearly
isn't straight.
He has a US 800 number, so it's a normal US call.
