I've been using K9 mail for some years, but I've been having trouble with it lately (*) and need to find a replacement. What is your preferred Android email client? I'm looking at I'm current trying out Blue Mail. I think it's too "blingy" and cluttered, and the reviews imply that it's a battery suck. What else should I look at? (*) In K9, when I follow a URL in an email and then return from the web browser (Chrome) or Youtube app, K9 crashes. I want to find another email client, which will hopefully cure the problem. Blue Mail does, indeed, seem to fix the issue, though I'm not sure if I like the app.

I use Blue Mail because it allows me to download mail at will rather
than syncing my accounts, which I NEVER want to do. I couldn't get K9
to do that, but somebody said that I was doing it wrong; even so, I
didn't bother to try it again. I don't use it often enough that battery
suckage is a problem (just when I'm away from home and want to send
email and maybe get an answer back). I use Shut App to shut everything
down -- this seems to be the only app I've found that actually does that.

I can't remember, it was over a year ago :-( I seem to remember that I had to beat something into submission, but I can't remember what. Maybe some google setting that allowed manual syncing but didn't require it. Or maybe not. POS. I hate that google wants us to sync everything. The last thing I want to do is clutter up my phone with the ads/spam from the public account that I want to use if using it might put me on a mailing list. I also want to keep ALL my real email on my desktop computer, and google makes it difficult to do that with a pop account, which is what my serious accounts have been ever since gmail started up. I want EVERYTHING separate, but google doesn't see it that way. When Skynet finally becomes sentient, google will be part of it. Maybe all of it. >> even so, I didn't bother to try it again. If you use the gmail app, you can't choose to download mail only when
and from which account you choose. It's download everything as soon as
you get it or download nothing. Moreover, you can't use different
logins for different apps and have more than one open at a time. If I
logged in with my phone to ID1, next time I log in with my computer I'll
be logged into ID1, even if what I want to do is upload a photo to my
ID2 Picasa account. I have to log out of ID1 and then into ID2. If I
want to look at a youtube video channel I subscribed to with ID3 I have
to log out of ID2...
What would be nice would be able to have all three open in tabs on my
desktop at the same time. I can't have that.

When I opened the accounts I had only one device -- my desktop. When
did gmail start? I've since opened a couple of IMAP accounts, but since
people know my POP address there's not much point in using them -- I'm
afraid people will default to an IMAP address for me and I'll never get
the mail because I never look at that account even if it's right there
in my Thunderbird list.
I've got a lot of awkward constructs just because I need to keep legacy
stuff going :-(

I get the impression that the Gmail app has changed considerably in the past short while and it no longer works the way you describe. It's on my list of things to try when or if Blue Mail doesn't work out. > When I opened the accounts I had only one device -- my desktop. > When did gmail start? I think you're confused about that. Email addresses have nothing to do with the protocol you use to that mailbox. Gmail, for example, can be accessed via the web interface, POP3, or IMAP. All interfaces can be used at any time. You can choose to retrieve your mail with any of those methods. POP3 is most suitable if you use a single computer to retrieve your email and you want to remove your email from the server ASAP and store it locally. IMAP is most suitable if you check your email mailbox using multiple devices, leaving the mail on the server. You can later choose to remove some or all mail from the server and archive it locally. > I've got a lot of awkward constructs just because I need to keep > legacy stuff going :-( Yes, but it's unnecessary.

So not yet replaced. If one is familiar and satisfied with POP3, not with IMAP4, or an older client has IMAP4 troubles, and provider support it, there is no reason to change. Especially for older people challenged by any change. Note that I do NOT use POP3, but I would not be so extremistic in this matter. > >>> plus, who has only one computer anymore? >> >> Many people have no computer at all. > > then they won't be getting very much email, will they? > You need not to have a computer to have very many emails. -- Poutnik ( The Pilgrim, Der Wanderer ) Knowledge makes great men humble, but small m en arrogant.

I have to use pop for one of my accounts on iOS as IMAP isn't working for that provider. Tried to get to the bottom of, but have so far failed.

However the older cell phones, like the flip-top phone I used until a few months ago are not really computers, in my opinion. I suppose one could argue that even those older cell phones were computers, but at the most, they were very primitive computers compared to what's available today.
