Many commercial VPN providers require that customers use their
proprietary client and since most people use Windows, often the only
choice is a Windows client. Not as nefarious as it sounds since the VPN
provider has access to all your traffic anyways.

Many people use VPN to get around IP address based limitations on
services like Hulu and Netflix, to make it looks like they are in the
US. Like Americans who travel abroad, or people in Europe who want the
bigger selection Netflix offers in the US compared to what they offer in
Europe. Copyright holders like to sell rights to each individual country
separately, hence this idiotic situation.

That's a really strange view. VPN in general is an encrypted pipe
between two points in some network, usually the internet. OpenVPN is
just one VPN implementation, there are many others. A configuration file
for a particular VPN client and service is just that.
