There is an open source openvpn client in the play store too,

As I recall, openvpn used to recommend that. Now they recommend their
Private Tunnel VPN at
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.openvpn.privatetunnel

I've only used the former. I didn't think it's that great but it
certainly worked fine for Airvpn. I'm using Freedome currently, mostly
because Freedome provides tracking protection too.
