Here's an idea. Do just what you said. If it's really necessary,
install the software on the kid's phone and tell him you're going to
track him. But then install the same software on your phone and let the
kid track you.
The kid will soon learn what bars, race courses, and houses of ill
repute you visit, or conversely, what a boring life you lead :)
It's a goose/gander thing that at least demonstrates some fairness.
