It's hard to allow kids to do things that you know are big mistakes.  A 
lot of times they just won't listen to you and are determined that they, 
and not you, are the only ones who know what's best for themselves.

In my experience, if you teach them as best you can and then trust them 
to do the right thing themselves, they'll do some really dumb things 
but, eventually, they'll learn and grow up.  A lot of times they do the 
wrong thing but they remember what you tried to teach them and they 
eventually understand that you knew some things they didn't and wanted 
only the best for them.

On the other hand if you don't trust them and treat them with distrust, 
they'll still make the same mistakes, but they'll also learn not to 
trust you and to try harder to hide things from you and lie to you. 
They learn to think of you as an enemy.  They may still learn and grow 
up but, for an awful lot of kids, I think it will take longer and be an 
even more painful journey - for you as well as for them.

Maybe the thing to do is to imagine yourself in their shoes and ask what 
you would think if you found out that someone was surreptitiously 
tracking you.

That's my advice - and worth every penny I charge for it :)
