Roger, Thanks for the tip about ES File Manager.  Didn't know it had 
that feature. The path to the remote manger was a bit different (I may 
have an older version of the app), but it worked like a charm.

Will, if your Android phone is one of the Samsung Galaxy models, Google 
or You Tube search "replacing USB port on Samsung galaxy S?".  I had to 
replace the one on my S2, and it was surprisingly easy.  No soldering. 
Just pull out the old circuit board and put in the new.  $7.00 for the 
part on Ebay.

Tools required are a very tiny Phillips head screwdriver (jewelers 
kind), thin piece of smooth plastic for prying things (guitar pick works 
very well), and a little patience handling the delicate parts. Took less 
than 30 minutes.  There are numerous videos showing how on You Tube, so 
apparently it's a common problem with some galaxy phones.
