Well, you could turn the server on only when you need it and turn it 
off when you're done. It's only a security concern while it's running. 
And I believe it can be made to be open only to your LAN and not from 
the Internet, but don't ask me how.

ssh is Secure Shell, similar to telnet. By itself it's not for 
transferring files, although I think it can be used with other 
protocols for encryption purposes. This isn't your solution.
