My micro usb slot is not working so I bluetooth my photos over to my linux laptop, which works fine, on a file-by-file basis. But, is there a way to select all the files in a folder in one step to transfer en masse? What I do is the following: 1. Click on Gallery 2. Scroll to the desired "album" 3. Select that album 4. This puts albums in a line on the left 5. And it puts the photos in the selected album in the right 6. I can long press on the first photo of the album 7. This brings up a checkbox in the top right of each picture 8. I can painstakingly select each picture (using that checkbox) 9. Then I hit the bluetooth icon at the top 10. I select my laptop (ubuntu-0) in the available device list 11. Android give a message saying "Sending filename.jpg". 12. Linux accepts the files in /tmp/bluetooth/filename.jpg This bluetooth file transfer is great, but, when there are a few hundred pictures, it's a pain to select each one, checkbox by checkbox by checkbox. Is there a way to select photos en masse for bluetooth file transfer from Android to Linux?

What about creating a ZIP file (put all your music in a ZIP),
doing the one transfer, and then dealing with the contents
(unzip) when it gets there ? That's assuming the Android will
tolerate the transfer of a large file, without barfing.
What I note about ZIP, is the performance level is not exactly
awe inspiring. I presume this is what happens with Flash based
storage ? The contents of this article aren't appropriate,
but just the comments about performance didn't exactly
impress me.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9324103/download-and-extract-zip-file-in-android
"it decompressed a 23 MB file into a 130 MB folder in exactly 1 minute:"
So that is writing out the archive contents after decompression,
at 130/60 = 2.2MB/sec. Wow...
Since Bluetooth is involved, it's going to be painfully slow
in any case. There is a Bluetooth standard, which operates
Bluetooth and Wifi "in parallel", but doing so may not
be all that common. The idea is, the Bluetooth supports
the PAN (personal area network), and the Bluetooth driver
uses the Wifi during the data transfer phase. It was a trick
the Bluetooth standards people thought up, to speed up
Bluetooth without messing up the other good aspects
of Bluetooth. The Wifi is the "HS" mentioned here.

I can painstakingly select each picture (using that checkbox) If you install Google Photos instead of using the factory installed Gallery ... you long-press the first photo to bring up the tick-boxes, and select the first image, then without raising your finger, slide left/right across images to select them one-by-one, or slide up/down and the list scrolls selecting them row-by-row.

I like that this Google Photos can select all photos easily, but when I started installing it, it asked for access to my identity, contacts, location, call information, etc., which a pure photo app wouldn't need (or even want). I'm not sure if this is a viable solution only because of that, because otherwise, what you mentioned was a good feature.

True, it does allow syncing to google drive etc, which are presumably why it needs permissions. I figure that since Google already have permission to virtually everything, giving another of their apps some rights doesn't alter much ... if it was e.g. a Flickr app wanting the same, I'd be wary of spreading permissions to Yahoo!

I do understand that, once you *trust* Google, they make your life easier by linking everything together, your photos, your contacts, your phone calls, your location, your buying and searching habits, etc. But, if you don't trust Google, then it's not so easy to decide what to do. I, for one, make up a google login when I create mine for Android, and I change it every once in a while. Since I never purchase apps, there's really no loss whatsoever, other than a bit of inconvenience when getting email (since I have to use K9 Mail instead of Gmail).

I didn't realize the WiFi network mattered, so I will confirm the Linux laptop and the Android phone *are* on the same network (it's a typical broadband WiFi router setup). I'm on KDE also. But I never heard of this "KDEConnect". Searching, I find this article: How to integrate Android into KDE Linux desktop http://xmodulo.com/integrate-android-kde-linux-desktop.html Here's what it says: KDE Connect has two components: KDE desktop component (kde-connect) and device components (e.g., Android app). Currently, for KDE Connect to work, the desktop computer and an Android device need to be on the same local network (via WiFi). Android app relies on UDP broadcast to advertise its presence to the desktop over the local network. Once paired, Android app communicates with the desktop via a public-key based encrypted channel.

Roger, Thanks for the tip about ES File Manager. Didn't know it had that feature. The path to the remote manger was a bit different (I may have an older version of the app), but it worked like a charm. Will, if your Android phone is one of the Samsung Galaxy models, Google or You Tube search "replacing USB port on Samsung galaxy S?". I had to replace the one on my S2, and it was surprisingly easy. No soldering. Just pull out the old circuit board and put in the new. $7.00 for the part on Ebay. Tools required are a very tiny Phillips head screwdriver (jewelers kind), thin piece of smooth plastic for prying things (guitar pick works very well), and a little patience handling the delicate parts. Took less than 30 minutes. There are numerous videos showing how on You Tube, so apparently it's a common problem with some galaxy phones. Bob

Many plug them in "hot" and end up with electrical (charge rate) failures or connection failures, other simply beat them up. The fact that Samsung has made it an easy to replace change-out method is a great thing, not a problem. The problem *was* when it was hard soldered and required a much more in-depth procedure to repair it. USB charging systems should be plugged in "cold" and the energized. So plug in the device unit first, then the cord end that goes into the charger unit. This keeps the tiny arc that occurs from causing the plating to get abraded or damaged (as quickly).

Bob, I still haven't found the "Remote" feature of my ES File Explorer either. I don't know how to tell what *version* my ES File Explorer is, but it's probably a year or two old. > Will, if your Android phone is one of the Samsung Galaxy models, Google > or You Tube search "replacing USB port on Samsung galaxy S?". The USB port is soldered in, and "can" be replaced, but it's a dangerous job that I'm not an expert in soldering a dozen tiny pins at once. So, I just charge the battery in a separate charger, and swap batteries out daily. Bluetooth works fine - it's slow - but it works. I can bluetooth to Linux without any problems. I can't bluetooth to Windows but for now, I'm just trying to get Linux working. The only problem with bluetooth to Linux is that I have to select the picture one by one, which is a pain for 200 pictures. > Tools required are a very tiny Phillips head screwdriver (jewelers > kind), thin piece of smooth plastic for prying things (guitar pick works > very well), and a little patience handling the delicate parts. You really need to be an expert, which I am not.

The replacement port part number is 3722-003512.
Five solder points are connection to shield.
Six connection points are gold plated, and intended
as the connector pins. Possible assignments (microUSB)
would be:
* 1 - (red) VDC / plus / +5V
* 2 - (white) Data -
* 3 - (green) Data +
* 4 - (varies) ID
* 5 - (black) GND / ground
* 6 - Shield

In one thread, someone recommended a hot air gun for
replacement. If I was going to attempt that with a soldering
iron, I'd want to know the pin spacing first.
There's a picture here, of it assembled.

When you look at the size of this person's fingers compared
to the connector, the pitch on that connector is pretty fine.

I have watched all the videos, some of which are two hours long. It's too involved for me. For home charging, I just use a separate charger & extra batteries. For file transfer, I use the removable SD card and bluetooth. (I got the WiFi working also, thanks to the suggestions here). The only place it's problematic is on the road.

You've never *seen* the connector then. Take a look at time point 1107 in this video for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Vic0SJ6IzYo#t=1107 Likewise, see this video at time point 2011. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=CvIgST4weOE#t=2011 There are LOTS and LOTS of "pins" (more than I want to count). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgGkCjNSlSM Suffice to say you must be an *expert* at desoldering and soldering to replace this connector without bricking the phone. While you may claim to be an expert at everything, I make no such claims.

I don't understand why or how you get a space in your followup line when I reply to you. Normally I just reply, and don't even *look* at the followups (which the rickety troll takes advanage of by adding the comp.os.linux.advocacy group to). But, you didn't answer the question. Why do followups *only* in respond to your posts not work without manual editing? What is your logical thought process in that?
