#76 — Slashdot Beta Sucks

Welcome Slashdot Beta Exodus (just kidding, but it would be funny).

Watch out for that RocketRabbit, while I thank him/her for pointing me
at eternal-september.org, I noted on slashdot a somewhat racist comment
they made about Richard Stallman.

Still, it's nice to be back on usenet. While there will never be a
redesign of usenet, I do think there is immense space for custom readers
that could potentially compete (even for mere mortals) with facebook, twitter,
and slashdot.

Long Live USENET!!!

Hi.. another refugee here. It would be nice if a Slashdot like
moderation could be built on top of usenet.

By the way, today I got a pop-up at the top of my screen when visiting
slashdot.org that reads "We Hear You! .... something something." I
think they just realized their revenue stream is about to pour itself
down the fucking toilet.

Might be too late, Timothy, you corporate-speak mushymouthed bastard.
You don't get any credit for saying "we're listening to you" if you're
really not, and most of us around here are smart enough to know when
we're getting 'managed.'

Is the Slashdot cat out of the bag?

I think that, while they realize that an exodus might take place, they
still don't really give a shit. Perhaps the whole idea from the start
was to destroy Slashdot - it is possible that the executives behind
Dice Holdings made a lot of money on other investments, and need a
corporate loss to offset a corporate gain for tax purposes.

Remember, Timothy and Rob are just employees now. When Dice calls up
and says "post this video advertisement" or "get to work updating
SlashBI" they do it.

Slashdot is only a community any more through sheer momentum.

Well, as they said in the financial report for last year
(http://www.diceholdingsinc.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=211152&p=irol-newsArticle_print&ID=1896508)

"Slashdot Media was acquired to provide content and services that are
important to technology professionals in their everyday work lives and
to leverage that reach into the global technology community benefiting
user engagement on the Dice.com site. The expected benefits have
started to be realized at Dice.com. However, advertising revenue has
declined over the past year and there is no improvement expected in the
future financial performance of Slashdot Media's underlying advertising
business. Therefore, $7.2 million of intangible assets and $6.3 million
of goodwill related to Slashdot Media were reduced to zero."

Can't see they're going put much/any effort into keeping the existing
users happy. More likely yhey might end up selling the existing database
of users and discussions to facebook or something to be retrospectively
mined for marketing.

So they bought a lemon, are trying to squeeze a few drops out of it, and
they have nothing to lose since they're already not making any money.

Glad I'm not there to see the train wreck, though I do hope we put
together something equal as a community. It really was a great place
for commentary and I learned a lot there. Still do.

Usenet has the potential to be much better than any of the web 2.0 type
shit that people seem to favor now. Sometimes you don't want promoted
links and 'share this' all over everything - just a few good comments
and the ability to blow away the assholes.

I will miss Slashdot as well. I don't think I will post there any more
except to draw attention to Usenet and seeing as how my account has
been given the Slashdot Death Penalty I can't forsee many people seeing
those comments anyway.

I _never_ wanted that. It mostly is a waste of screen real estate.

I (usenetter since 1995) left Slashdot after a previous redesign.
It just took too much effort to handle that user interface.

I never left usenet though.

I won't, I'm just happy, because I think usenet is a much better
environment for communities. Welcome (back) slashdotters!

It seems that they are admitting that they valued Slashdot at $13.5
million at least for tax purposes, but that this value was entirely
intangable and or goodwill based. Another way of looking at this is to
say that Slashdot didn't have any value to start with, except the users
who were free to leave at any time of course.

If, as they say, the current value is $0 then there is pretty much no
business case (at least to a PHB) for keeping it going.

Makes you wonder how much they wasted on SlashBI and Slashcloud and
shit like that?

Another person checking in. This is insightful. Yep, they seem to be

Nope, but you do have me...TrueSatan but
I'll answer to His Satanic Majesty if you
prefer.

As regards Slashdot I've been a
reasonably regular story submitter for
some years and have seen the same decline
as most, if not all, of you. I kept
hoping against hope that it would recover
but the beta and the lack of real regard
for the community have eroded my
enthusiasm for the site to as good as
zero.

We appear to have a fresh chance at
something worthwhile here and I hope that
if we all put the energy into this that
has been expended on complaints that have
fallen on deaf ears into this we can pull
it off.

Yeah,
I'm not confident in the methodology and "business plan" of the proposed
altslashdot site that is being worked on.. Not "community" enough, IMHO...

The guy behind it seems to have good
intentions but the lack of concrete basis
behind the site worries me...will he use
the old slashcode...or a wiki...or
goodness knows what. Will he restrict
types of stories and if so on exactly
what basis and in doing so have an
overlord status over any community...and
if there is an elite set who join in such
decisions who selects them and how?
Without a great deal more clarity about
such utterly vital details I'm not
committing myself to it just yet.

It's pretty clear that altslashdot as it is envisioned by the people
who are currently attempting it, will have all the downsides to the
current /. with several other foibles as well. They appear to be
obsessed with moderation, which while useful was more often abused than
not at ./ which is the reason I always browsed at -1.

The best thing to do is post an interesting story to this group and
comment on the stories other people post, that you find interesting.

DOWN WITH BETA, UP WITH USENET!

Both of you need to learn that usenet is not Microsoft Outlook so here
we post replies *after* first reading the post.

That's like RTFA. Will never catch on with a Slashdot crew.

Is comp.misc the best place for this... should we be proposing a
slashdot specific group... alt.portman.hotgrits or whatever?

Comp.misc seems to be totally abandoned, and is already carried by the
news servers. This is the main reason why I advocate its use - we
certainly don't have to convince anybody to peer it and we won't piss
off its current users.
