They used to work on GNOME 2, but not with GNOME 3. (Using Debian Wheezy). I waste a lot of time looking for files I need to frequently edit. They are messing with menus and stuff in a way that looks pretty (in fact it looks very much inspired by those floating menus that iOS uses) but at the expense of introducing extra keystrokes or mouse clicks to get stuff done. If you follow the link through to that Silencio guy's blog (http://blogs.gnome.org/pbor/2014/02/20/gedit-new-look/) I think this comment is pretty appropriate for the other changes made as well: "The first picture looks wrong. Instead of having two buttons next to each other, there’s a drop-down list. Therefore instead of one action to switch (click a button), I need two actions (click the list, click the item). The drop-down list should be displayed only when there’s not enough horizontal space for the buttons to be displayed next to each other (I’m assuming that extensions can add additional buttons)." It does *look* nice, but unfortunately that's not what I ask of my software. (I still use Xemacs sometimes, and it's frikkin' ugly, let's face it).

Anyway, if your XEmacs looks ugly, it's your own fault. In my case, menubar turned off, tool bar turned off, background black, default foreground Chartreuse, Mode line wheat with 3d effect. I don't see much of the editor except for the mode line, but that's the way I want it. And the text I'm editing looks great. -- Dan Espen

I'll try that color scheme tonight and see if it works. Truth is, I use most editors - emacs and vim - on the console, so lousy Xwindows graphics aren't often a problem :)

Green on black was (and is) considered easy on the eyes. If you just use the color green (Red=0,Green=255,Blue=0) it will be too dark. Chartreuse is brighter and works well as a foreground against black. Not sure what you mean by lousy XWindows graphics. XWindows draws widgets and fonts like any other OS. -- Dan Espen

This post serves mostly to announce my lurker status to the group. :) I
also used to lurk on slashdot many years ago.
I too returned to my usenet roots a while ago because WWW's "average IQ"
is in decline. Regardless, WWW also enables me to hear some voices of
genuine genius for the first time. It's my bet that I can count on
usenet to clue me in on the best of WWW.
WWW searches are now too painful to endure. I bet that
find . | grep -l gedit | grep -l fails | grep -l save | grep files
under the appropriate usenet group directory will find a pertinent
answer quicker than a traditional WWW search. That's why I archive
usenet to my own server; to search my own way and to play by my own
rules.
Enough of politics. The information that follows is of limited use given
that gedit 3.x has been released. It's mostly an excuse to post to
comp.misc.
Good luck guys!
###
For years a gedit bug caused a failure to properly save files on an smb
file system. The patch that follows took care of the problem for me.
(My CVS chops leave a lot to be desired.)
/* kuenz close the file so we can rename it */
if (close (lsaver->priv->fd) != 0)
{
g_warning("couldn't close");
}
###
/* kuenz close tmpfd so we can rename it */
if (close (tmpfd) != 0)
{
g_warning("could not close tmpfd");
}
###
/* restat and get the mime type */
/* kuenz if (fstat (tmpfd, &new_statbuf) != 0) */
if (stat (lsaver->priv->local_path, &new_statbuf) != 0)
{
g_set_error (&lsaver->priv->error,
G_IO_ERROR,
g_io_error_from_errno (errno),
"%s", g_strerror (errno));
close (tmpfd);
goto out;
}
