In UK courts the loser generally pays all the costs. Anyone who persistantly files nuisance cases can be declared a "Vexatious Litigant" and can't bring any cases without the prior approval of the courts. I've seen that done by the US Supreme court. There's a prisoner
in Florida (IIRC) that has been submitting certiorari writs to the
court en masse[*]. The court finally said "no more from you".
[*] Self represented, and not particularly conversant with the
legal codes.

He'd fuss over the tiniest details, and the only reason his name kept appearing in the news was because he'd have these court cases. One time the judge removed himself, basically saying "I can't take this guy anymore", another time the judge said "you can't do this anymore", but that must have been specific to something, since recently he won a decision that allowed him a second parka, and then won another related decision, that he not have to pay the fee for filing the motion. I gather law books are well read in prison. If you've got a long sentence, there isn't that much to do, so why not read up on law. And thus they do file motions on all kinds of things, amateur lawyers who may actually get quite good at it. Of course, it works better for the person wrongfully convicted, if they can get a retrial or whatever, they get out, while the prisoner nitpicking about whether they can use a knife to eat with is most likely nitpicking. There was a Nova program recently about some in a Nazi POW camp deciding to try to build a glider to escape. It turned out that the camp library included books on airplane design! (Again, not much else to do, and law book wouldn't help much.) Seems that they were close to finished when that camp was liberated. So, not so long ago, they went back to reconstruct the design and test fly it off the roof. -- glen

That would have been Colditz. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colditz_Cock -- "If you're not able to ask questions and deal with the answers without feeling that someone has called your intelligence or competence into question, don't ask questions on Usenet where the answers won't be carefully tailored to avoid tripping your hair-trigger insecurities." - D M Procida, UCSM

Apparently one of the POW camps had a transmitter, never used but there just in case. As the war continued, there was worry that there would be a massacre, and they wanted that transmitter for that moment. Since the escapes were well organized, I'm sure it was a great learning experience, someone with experience teaching others how to forge papers and turn uniforms into civilian clothing. I suppose even without the escapes, they'd have organized classes, just to keep everyone occupied. We sort of see that in The Great Escape, where one minute someone is teaching birdcalls, then when the guard has moved on, they are forging documents or something. Likely an exaggeration, but just like those stuck in the antarctic over the winter, they likely did have people with something to share teach the others. Michael

A few years back, one party was desperate to get enough judge candidates to fill out the ballot, so they talked a bunch of folks (with no law background at all) into running; sadly, that's not unusual for the party out of power. However, the tide turned and they won, so we ended up with all those yahoos on the bench--and most of them unhappy to be there. The appeals courts have been flooded with cases as a result, and the typical wait for a _trial_ have gone from being measured in months to now being measured in years.
