For large complicated antennas (anything from the internal wire in an AM radio, to a beam array such as is used for TV receivers or ham rigs, to a radar dish, to the multiple complex structures attached to a TV transmitter) as "antennas". But "aerial" seems a wee bit quaint, I'd never call TV "rabbit ears" an "aerial", and I might well choose the word "antenna" even for those small, simple ones.

And, of course, the correct plural is, "Antennae", deriving as it does from, "Antemnae". Certainly in acadaemic engineering in 1945, "Antennae" was the word used. Perhaps "Antennas" came into widespread usage because nerds and geeks lacked a proper education?

Yes, in ancient times it was "antennae". More people learned Latin in those days. Merriam-Webster shows both forms as being acceptable (with "ae" listed first). Oxforddictionaries (that's the OED people) shows "antennas" as being "N. American or technical", for the radio meaning. Of course, there's always a battle between the lexiographic prescriptionists and descriptionists. Neither source tells me what "acadaemic" means, though I found it used online here and there. An archaic British spelling, or perhaps that's how it was spelled in 1945? > Perhaps "Antennas" came into widespread usage because nerds and geeks lacked > a > proper education?

Quite why this was too much for Mr Metz is a puzzle. > >It wasn't to much, simply irrelevant. The fact remains that the >"wireless" used wires. Why that is too much for you is obvious. It's quite simple: a device that is referred to as a "wireless", which is short for "wireless receiver", is a device that receives "wireless" transmissions (as opposed to a "wireless device" that receives transmissions) - it is not a claim that the device itself uses no wires for anything at all, just that the _transmissions_ it receives are wireless, which in the case of a radio receiver they very much are, in the sense that they do not require wires along the length of the transmission and that likely the majority of the transmission distance is achieved without wires - it's "wireless" as opposed to "wired", where there is some wire or set of wires that connect transmitter and receiver along the entire distance. That there are wires involved at _some_ or even at _multiple_ points along the transmission path, or in the device itself, does not negate the fact that the transmission is such that wires are not required for the entire distance. Thus, a "wireless receiver" is a 'receiver' for 'wireless transmissions', and that two-word term can then be shortened to "wireless" in a way that makes absolutely perfect sense (unless one were to deliberately try to avoid accepting that). Ten-plus years ago I was reading an account of an Atlantic convoy during World War Two. Some ship(s?) had lost contact with the convoy and the convoy was trying to reconnect. I clearly remember reading something to the effect of "they could not establish contact using radio-telephone, so they tried wireless". When I was about 5, I figured the difference between radio-telephone and the other thing was the shape of the instrument you held in your hand, but I think it must be more than that. What is the difference between radio-telephone and wireless?
