On the odd chance someone in the universe finds this sadly funny- I already hate SoylentNews with all of my bitter little heart. The reason is especially ironic given that SN was born of "FuckBeta" movement. I loathe unneeded and overbroad Terms of Service. I suppose the only reason I read ToS is because I'm a massochist. "You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, **hateful**, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any laws be it of your country, the country where “SoylentNews” is hosted or International Law." I actually can't register to their forums because I just can't stand to have to think about whether or not something I say might be "hateful". Much of what I like to write about is that which I hate. I write hateful things on internet forums because I think if I didn't, I'd commit violent acts in real life. What I loved about slashdot was the freedom to - for instance, say things like "Fuck Beta", and know that it was totally acceptable in that forum. $0.02... (Yes, I know, sane people don't read ToS, or if they do, they don't actually think about them. Like I said, I'm sadly a psychotic massochist in that way) -dmc

"https://www.phpbb.com/community/ucp.php?mode=terms" So I wouldn't read too much in that: the ToS of SoylentNews itself will most probably be completely different.

What Koen said. I too read the TOS (I mean, it was short enough that I /could/ read it, which was refreshing in and of itself) but I also came to the conclusion this was standard boilerplate text for the PhpBB forum. However, if you have a concern you ought to mention it to the SN admins and suggest they hammer out a new TOS. Soylent is still developing in all areas and I wouldn't take anything as written in stone yet. Although honestly, I'd be surprised if Slashdot didn't have similar text in its terms (I'd check, but I'm trying to honor the boycott ;-).

I'm not convince "Uck-Fay Eta-Bey" qualifies as hate speech these days, anyway. Something like those guys who harrassed some woman via twitter with insistent threats of death and rape is probably more like hate speech these days. Remember in the 1980s when parents complained that the "A-Team" was too violent, and magazine articles counted bullets shot per show? These days, A-Team doesn't look violent at all. Hate speech has evolved in the same way, I think. You'd probably have to threaten very specific things to very specific people to 'qualify.'

Just to let people know, John (at) SoylentNews (the admin) has replied to this on squte.com, using the name 'EvilOverlord'. I am copying it below for those reading this on desktop readers QUOTE I'm with everyone else on this - don't read too much into the TOS you find on SoylentNews. Right now we're rushing to get everything done, and have only been addressing issues related to first rollout. I intend to turn the site into a nerd utopia that bucks all the ugly corporate trends. This will take time to gel - certainly more than a week. Check us out in a few months, once we've had a chance to settle in and address the details. You'll probably like the TOS. Did I mention I'm in charge over there? Probably should have... John (at) SoylentNews (dot) org END QUOTE regards ~tdk -- View this thread at http://squte.com/node/4410#comment-10612
