While I use Awesome (a tiling window manager) on my Debian desktop, on a
laptop I've found KDE convenient. Laptops usually have special keys to
adjust volume and screen brightness etc and then one might need to turn
off or on one or more of the radios and so on.

Desktop environments tend to map these extra keys so they work and they
provide handy widgets for controlling the radios for example. I don't
think window managers do that for you automatically.
