The fact that modern desktops have the computing power of old PDPs doesn't have anything to do with deciding whether the old 'centralized' model of computing has benefits that would be interesting today. Ask any sysadmin who has had to deal with a fleet of PCs, each user storing his stuff locally, people emailing each other documents to collaborate, etc. If modern PCs have high specs, hooray. Now put a souped-up, modern, high spec version of what used to be called a PDP down in the basement, and put a thin client on every desk. Live happily ever after. Ostensibly, if desktops are 1x10^6 times more powerful, our servers are, too: a recipe for happiness.
