That was the Audi A2, and it was a myth invented by the press and / or
competitors.  What the A2 doesn't have is a *hinged* bonnet - you just
remove the entire thing, and it doesn't even require any tools.  It also
has a service hatch that allows you to fill oil and windscreen fluid
without removing the bonnet.
