free and open source are two different things, free are usually things 
like hotmail, google groups, and so on.

Open source on the other hand provides you all the information you need 
to compile the program yourself and of course this means you can also 
take a look what the program actually does.

Do you know all the data that your microsoft windows vista sends to 
microsoft? It's quite a lot, compare that with Linux which don't send 
anything.

Yes, that's why most devices are running Linux so they can do some 
advanced stuff.
