It should read

var bool = true;
while(bool) {
console.log ("Less is more!");
bool = false;
}

Yes? So what? My questions still stand.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this is what I have understood from your posts.
1) You want to learn to code in "javascript"
2) You have found this site "Code Academy"
3) They offer a kind of interactive course, and through their site you
have some kind of textbox in which you type your code, then you press a
button "Try it!" or "Execute!" and you can see the results.

If this is the case maybe their site is buggy or something else. Manage
to create a minimal development environment.
1) use Notepad or something else and create a html page. The structure is:
<html>
<head>
<script>
... your code goes here, f.e:
console.log("hello, world")
</script>
</head>
<body>
...html goes here, f.e.
<p>My test page!</p>
</body>
</html>

Save to test.html and open it with Chrome (or whatever browser you
want). (file/open)

This NG is aimed at users a bit more experienced, however. Probably
isn't the right place to begin with.

Quite true - I've had that experience in the perl ng. However:

What helps
==========

Giving *complete* details of what has been tried, what is wanted, and
what has been used to try to achieve the goal. Including saying which
OS, which browser(s), and which editor(s) have been used. And what
results have been observed. Giving, in other words, a proper idea of
the context.

Using a proper newsreader and avoiding google groups at all costs also
helps.

What doesn't help
=================

Childish comments from PointyHead about there being "no javascript" and
whinges about attribution lines.

a Web page appears to be yearning for the bad old days, before the Web,

I agree completely with you, and to go further, one should read the
rules, policy and FAQs before any attempt to pose a question in a NG.

BUT in the real world, people tends to think that if there is a NG
dedicated to a topic, just to ask a simple question related (in a
general sense) to that topic is OK.

Then here they discover that answers are completely different from the
expected ones, with people asking what are you trying to do, why you
pose the question, how do you think that the question is correct, why
are you using Google, what kind of OS are you using, or criticism about
the way you put the terms of the question, the wording, the meaning, the
insides, the implications, the signature, the...

OK, there are no free lunches, people here does it for free and this is
not a help desk etc. Oh yes and do your homework on your own. We want
smart questions, we (you) are experts, we hate jquery and we only
consider questions regarding pure ECMAscript implementations, we discuss
endlessly if it can be considered correct to say Javascript or
JavaScript or javascript etc. etc.

Sometimes a newbie arrives, is rapidly crucifixed and disappears.

What does not help:
-------------------
to seem to be collaborative but to joke in fact with newbies, pretending
not to understand a simple question, nitpicking, taking words in
strictly literal sense, asking to be precise to someone that can't, and
insulting the intelligence that should allow us to go further the
imprecise wording of a non-techie and try to understand what he is
trying to do.
Only my opinion, of course, anyway.
Dan

It's such a useful skill that people should be urged to practice it.

And it's useful everywhere, not just in javascript or programming. It
can save a lot of time and a lot of money.

Yes, you are right and how can one not agree with you?

I was trying to say that, f.e, if I go to a psychologist, it is very
likely I would put my problems in a totally imprecise manner, i mean not
using the right words to describe my symptoms/problems, from the
scientific point of view of Psychology: it is the psycho that goes
through my confused wording and grasps what I probably am trying to
explain. Should I be able to put the question in the right way, chances
are that I wouldn't need a Psycho at all. :-)

That is why learning to express yourself is so important. I've
*several* times had the experience that I have a problem, and want to
post here about it. The act of trying to formulate a post with
*clarity* has often led me to a solution, because I've been forced to
*think* about the issue.

That is also why being slightly tough on people whose posts are vague
is actually good for them.

Now imagine stumbling into a conference of psychologists during the expert
panel's discussion on developmental psychopathology, and then babbling
about how your mother never loved you enough. Perhaps someone might
take pity and try to help you, but it's likely not the right forum, and
these academics are not necessarily the right ones to help you. You're
taking up valuable time that they were planning on spending on something
else. Even if they pay attention to your case, you might find that what
they focus on about you is not exactly what you'd like them to help you
with.

That's not what comp.lang.javascript is like. But you should keep that
in mind as an alternate metaphor, because it's as close to the truth as
is a professional psychologist.

This is not a help group. There are many people here who enjoy helping
out beginners, but not many who appreciate having that help taken for
granted or having that help expected of them.

This is a free-flowing discussion group. The one who started the
discussion has little authority about where the continuing discussion
leads.

This is a group that has over many years developed its own quirks, its
own cast of oddball characters, its own style of response. In short,
it is a community. Someone new here does have to honor that and not
simply insist that the community must bend to her or his preferences.

I happen to fall more on the be-nice-to-newbies end of the spectrum, but
I still appreciate questions that show research and offer me something of
technical interest. I prefer questions that show that the poster has
actually read "How To Ask Qustions The Right Way" [1]

Well, I tried to be of help and ended my post writing something like
"this is a NG where people is a bit experienced, maybe it's not the
right place for such elementary questions" but I have been lashed for
that, and I have been told that nowhere in the group's policy is stated
that only experts can participate.. etc.

Yes, but what about the very same panel calling himself simply
"Psychology Discussions", then someone stumbles in, asks some ridiculous
questions and people begins to make a fool of him, asking candidly
things like "please, to be clearer, are you referring to the Wosgan
theory of stereotypes or the commonly accepted paradigm of the intrinsic
neuronal redundance?" [1]

Maybe simply ignoring them seems too easy? People can learn from words,
and from silence too.

Well, I know, as a long-time lurker, your attitude of courtesy and
support when you materialize in the NG. It is somewhat surprising to me
that you devote one of your unfortunately rare apparitions to play the
devil's advocate! :-)

No questions on it. Nevertheless, what about people that does not limit
to ignore irrelevant questions, but feels obligate to torture the
newcomer/amateur/unexperienced/ignorant/confused?
We have a word for it in Italy [2], and it is generally considered bad
habit...

[1] Obviously I have only put toghether some words.. don't ask me who
Wosgan is, nor anything about neuronal redundance!

You see, there you go again. We're trying to discuss developmental
psychopathology and you have to bring up Wosgan again! Can't you leave
it alone? No one needs another beginner's level rant on neuronal
redundance; anyone who's studied even the beginnings of the theory of
stereotypes knows that stuff cold! :-)

Thanks for the kind words. I spend far too little time here, planning on one day writing my own USENET-for-the-web interface that won't get blocked
by the kinds of companies where I tend to do my work. But for the moment
I'm stuck on the execrable Google Groups interface, which has almost chased me off altogether.

I'm not really playing the devil's advocate. I didn't even read the whole thread; for some reason GG was being odd about that too. I just saw the post to which I responded. And I did try to be humorous about it. :-) I really do like to respond to interesting content and to help out when I can, but I expect people to come in and pay attention to the mores of the group.

I don't understand it. Unfortunately some of our worst offenders also have some of really good technical chops. Of course some of them also insist that there is no Psychology, so it's hard to know what they want to debate in their conferences... :-)

I wish English had an equivalent word. It certainly is an obnoxious habit.

No joke. I have already posted in the forums. Heck I went to report a bug because I think this problem is one huge bug. I want it resolved. I have done everything to try to resolve it.

Iria, I was answering Tim Streater and wrote "site" but I meant
"Newsgroup" so maybe there is a misundertanding.

Can you explain a bit what is exactly the "editor" you use, or in other
words, how you execute your scripts?

Yes, it can be very frustrating but keeping clam and testing logically is
about the best way to find out what's going on. That means avoiding
hyperbole. You have not done "everything to try to resolve it" by any
stretch of the imagination! Stick with the facts!

It's a depressing truth that the vast majority of bugs found by
beginners are not bugs but some kind of misunderstanding. I reported
more bug in my first few years than in the last few decades, and I don't
think software is getting any less buggy. Of course, this could be the
one, so no one should dismiss your bug report, but if it like your
description of the problem here, it's unlikely that anyone will be able
to help much -- there's just not enough data.

I would bet big money that the OP is talking about the codeacademy.com
interface. You get a screen where you type code and hit a button to have
it run and the output tested.

(I am not unaware of the danger that this is a case of that other great
truth: that the vast majority of guesses made about what posters are
doing are wrong!)
