Upon reflection, this isn't too surprising. JLS 15.17.2
specifies the outcome of attempting integer division by zero:
"[...] if the value of the divisor in an integer division is 0,
then an ArithmeticException is thrown." That is, the line in
question is roughly equivalent to
throw new ArithmeticException(); // int x = 2 / 0;
This is a perfectly valid (if not especially useful) statement,
so the compiler must accept it; the compiler would exceed its
authority if it rejected valid (albeit silly) code.
A warning would be nice, though.
