Upon encountering a new trigger file in that directory, the main programs executes one of the utilities. The trigger files contains information about which utility to run and, possibly, with which arguments. Make a couple of bash aliases or shell scripts to easily create the correct trigger files in the target directory. Start the main program and keep it running in the background, and let the user interact with it through the aliases / shell scripts. If the utilities need to write output to stdOut, it gets a little trickier, but you can finagle your way around that too. -- Leif Roar Moldskred
