I am not talking about string comparison. I am talking about specific
comparison semantics that has to be implemented ad hoc.

Okay, so your point was that using string comparison (not the type
String in itself) is not a good idea for versions; in which case I
agree. It sounded a bit different though. Using String to represent a
version and implement the right semantics for comparison is totally
sensible.

Not at all. Sorry - maybe it's my limit - but I don't see anything wrong
with the following - do you?

         List<Version> versions = new ArrayList<>();

         versions.add(new Version("1.9.0-123"));
         versions.add(new Version("1.10.0-123"));
         versions.add(new Version("1.7.0-123"));
         versions.add(new Version("1.7.0-10"));
         versions.add(new Version("1.7.0-9"));

         Collections.sort(versions);

         for (Version version : versions) {
             System.out.println(version);
         }

Output:
1.7.0-9
1.7.0-10
1.7.0-123
1.7.0-123
1.9.0-123
1.10.0-123
