streams and interface default methods was sort of part of lambda as
they were required to make lambdas useful for standard Java library
without breaking too much existing code.

There are various ways of handling that.

The simplest is probably converting the stream to a List (collect).

The logic behind streams is that they are a high level abstraction
with a default implementation and the intention that specific
implementation provide more efficient implementation when it
makes sense.

I would not look for alternatives unless I have a real
performance problem.
