WSDL is a general standard and not tied to Java.

JAX is a common prefix for all Java XML standards. The specific one
relevant for WSDL and SOAP is JAX-WS.

So obvious JAX-WS can refer to WSDL but WSDL can not refer to JAX-WS.

RESTFul web services (JAX-RS in Java) may have overtaken the most
popular position from SOAP web services (JAX-WS).

But for specific scenarios it depends a lot on whether you are
integrating with IBM/Oracle/MS ESB or exposing functionality to
smartphone apps and browsers.

Actually JAXB and XSD works great together.

Create your XSD's. Use the XJC tool to generate Java classes
with JAXB annotations and you are up and running with JAXB.
