Still experimenting, some more things don't make sense.

I add fields to the Customer class with default getters and setters and it makes them fields as soon as they have a value.  I can put @XmlAttribute above the field declaration and it converts to an attribute tag, but it only accepts @XmlElement on the setter method and it doesn't appear to change the XML any.

@XmlElement(required=true) doesn't seem to affect anything.  It allows to marshall/unmarshall with no value and leaves out the tag.  This doesn't work without creating a schema file?  It appears I need a schema now for each DataRecord type class to define validation such as required fields, min/max field length, etc.
