But here you were referring to USB-RS232-Interface-Chips, as far as I understood. And as far as I know one or various drivers for _all_ of them are included in the Linux-kernel since long ago. At least they all always worked out of the box for me and I've nether heard something contrary. > >> How would you get a USB device to work without a USB driver? Without _installing_ a driver at least, because by far the most drivers you could possibly need (not only usb) are already included with the kernel- and if where are new ones they come automatically with the usual updates. But maybe its also vice versa: because nearly no one delivers Linux-drivers, the kernel-developers are very active creating them. The downside: with specially Linux averse companies (e.g. canon printers, scanner... but not cameras) you may easily be out of luck, a lot of models are not supported at all. So with Linux you always should confirm before buying if where exists an driver...., but normally it does, and waits already on your PC for using it, no search and no installation required.

Let's face it: This discussion - driver needed or not - is worthless. The difference is the difference in policy: Windows doesn't care for your special needs, and Linux does care. That's why Linux is working properly with a huge bunch of different hardware from startup without hassle.

> Really? Any USB device can be operated without a driver under Linux? > That must be why so many device manufacturers don't bother to offer > Linux drivers... they don't need any! Well, lots of devices implement standard USB interfaces that Linux already knows about. With the remaining devices, you may be out of luck. Actually another idea occurs to me: give up on FTDI and USB and have Bluetooth instead. There are finally cheap gadgets for that: type nRF24L01 into the Ebay search box and you can get the board (34x17mm) for under $1.50. I'm not sure of the device side interface but it looks like you can connect it to one of the 430's on-chip uarts. Then power everything from a pair of AA cells (or a coin cell or small lipo if you want to save space) and there's no cable at all. You can operate it wirelessly from any laptop, tablet, or mobile phone with bluetooth.

If vendors have problems making compatible serial port cables I think they might also make crappy BT interfaces. I played with BT GPS receivers a bit and found the BT on computers at that time didn't work so well. I also had problems with it on a Palm. I had to tell it to connect and it would drop out randomly some time later. Often the PC gave me heartburn when trying to get it to connect at all. Does BT work any better these days? I should find out. I have a laptop with BT built in and I have yet to even test it. I want to use it with speakers so I don't need a cable. I gave up trying to find a decent mouse that would work on BT. Couldn't find the right set of buttons at a decent price. -- Rick

May be this is the future of IoT!? Anybody out there who tested this amazing device?

This chip maker only claims compatibility with their own devices. What makes you think this will work with bluetooth from a PC or phone? Even if you can use it with a PC, it is not a fully functional unit by itself. I believe this module is just a radio. It requires intelligence in the device to operate the radio to transmit and receive data. I did a quick scan of the documents and this is no easy device to operate. -- Rick

Maybe you are right: http://hackaday.com/2013/09/21/sending-data-over-bluetooth-low-energy-with-a-cheap-nrf24l01-module/ describes only a limited BLE compatibility. I still like the idea of a Bluetooth interface but it may cost more than the above.

Yeah, I read that post too optimistically because I know that Nordic Semi makes some Bluetooth chips like the one in the rfduino. Still if that $1.50 board is able to send any Bluetooth data at all, it may be that a software protocol implementation is the only thing stopping it from being real Bluetooth.

You'll wonder why you ever used cables!" But it doesn't say anything about Bluetooth or other well-known wireless connectivity schemes. It only says that it has automatic packet handling and GFSK modulation. Connection is done with a four wire SPI interface, which should be compatible with the MSP430. The data sheet has 75 pages, so it may need a while to get familiar with it, and as far as I see it allows a point to point connection even if it counts wireless PC peripherals and ultra low power sensor networks as applications. There are some Arduino tutorials which may be helpful. Quote: "Nordic's nRF24L01+ 2.4GHz RF radios are a great way to communicate wirelessly between Arduino's. They're cheap, and powerful. Unfortunately, they can be a little daunting to beginners to get started. Today, I want to make it easy for total beginners to get up and running on nRF24L01+ radios quickly and easily... Obviously, you'll want to buy two of the radios and protoboards because what good is a radio that can only talk to itself? ... Ok, do it all again, making another protoboard shield, on top of another Arduino, so our first unit has something to talk to." Source: http://maniacbug.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/getting-started-rf24/ That's what I was looking for. That's why they are always selling two units. That's what I said before: it's a point to point connection. But I am sure it is useful. Somebody has to start it with Forth. By the way, TI is offering wireless MSP430 Boosterpacks, and you need two of these, too.

For me it works flawlessly, using it ultimately mainly with Debian, but also with Archlinux and Gentoo (and of course without driver-installation). If, after plugging the LP in, it needs some time (~30 seconds) to become responsive, than you possibly have some kind of modem-manager active (included with kde, gnome, or so) that tries to initialize it as modem until giving up.... The 4E4th-IDE with wine in my opinion is unfortunately not the way to go: -_very_ slow (as all win32forth with wine, especially any output, i.e. "words" on the basic 4e4th-Launchpad normally needs about one second to complete, in the "wine-4e4th-IDE" on my PC about 45 seconds, but maybe this doesn't matter so much with a faster PC) -AND a lot of things not working properly -AND, last but not least, on ARM you would have even to emulate an Intel Processor with quemu, for than emulating the Windows-API with wine. I don't want to imagine the resulting "speed" and complexity. > For now I stay with my work improving the 4E4th-IDE. Suggestions welcome.
