Pi folks had a lot more manpower and a LOT more money to get where they are. We have been more Forth like. Minimal resources. One of my goals is to turn English majors into programmers. They get WORDs. To do that I have to get to high volumes. To get there I need the support of engineers and the Forth community. So far on both counts the support has been good enough. I can work with that. At this point it takes a visionary to see what we are doing. My hope is that in 6 months it will be way more obvious. Lots of stuff in the pipeline.

Yes, that was my point, being able to do a simple install (which I picture to be like a Windows install, run the program and wait for it to complete) would be very nice. That's all I was saying was that I remembered someone reporting that he figured out how to do it, but that it wasn't obvious to a newbie to Linux. Now it is documented and I need to tuck away the instructions. This reminds me of the issue I have with my new laptop. My old Vista machine was working pretty well most of the time until I ran out of memory. My new one uses Windows 8 and it seems like every time I restart it rather than just sleeping it I can't get the browsers to "see" the internet. It took me a little while searching from another computer to find that there is a "fix" which consists of running two command lines to reset IP stack features. Not at all obvious to most PC users, but rather simple once you know what you are doing. In fact, my Internet stopped working last night and in the process of trying to get it working again I rebooted the machine. It took me until this morning to realize I needed to do the IP reset procedure rather than hunting for an external problem which had fixed itself by then. :( I guess my point is that even once you learn things, they can be other than obvious depending on the circumstances. Having that tutorial is a *big* help. It just got bookmarked. -- Rick

You should be ok with the apt-get install. And while that might not be "intuitive" for a Windows user, it is one of the things you get reminded very early when you start using Linux. -- Bernd Paysan "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" http://bernd-paysan.de/

Ok, this might sound "snippety", but let the user supply more of their own hardware. E.g., when I buy a PC motherboard it comes with an empty socket for a processor, empty sockets for memory, empty connectors for USB cables, etc. Then, buyers of your boards and Simon's and other board producers can go in on a mass bulk purchase of those items, if they want, or re-use existing components, or use more off-the-shelf components, e.g., USB hardware, instead of custom stuff. I don't know about "snippety", but I just don't follow. I think what you are suggesting is typically done at the board level. A base CPU board allows the user to plug in daughter boards for more I/O of various types. In Simon's case this is handled by separate boards connected by RJ-11 cables running I2C if I recall. I expect that could be daisy chained. My boards are custom for a networking company and are not sold to the public. So they are made in one configuration and that is not likely to change. They also have a unique connector configuration which is not likely to be useful to anyone else. -- Rick

We did this two years ago with 4e4th on TI's first LaunchPad, without any funding. We had to do our own adaptions to make Forth suitable to such a board. Having good experience with RSC-Forth (written by Randy Dumse) for several decades, we made the flashing and starting process as easy as possible to work with the specially developed 4E4th-IDE. To synchronize with the 4E4th-IDE the prompt contains some additional values. The 4E4th-IDE has been designed with education in mind: http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/euroforth/ef12/papers/bruehl.pdf http://www.4e4th-ide.org/ http://www.4e4th.org/ We are working on enhancements of the 4E4th-IDE, but it exceeds our capabilities to offer a 4e4th (Forth for Education) for other microprocessor boards.

There's lots of similar boards already. It is expensive because I'm getting them made in the USA. At the 100,000 level and up the difference in price is minor. But if cost in low volumes daunts you we offer bare boards that are designed for hand soldering. http://spacetimepro.blogspot.com/2014/04/lpc812-devl-20-march-2014.html The boards only look similar. If you are an engineer and look at the designs you will blanche. I did. In my book (aerospace- commercial - industrial) the designs I see are crap. I would never put that stuff in anything I wanted to sell. So that is what I designed for. Boards that could go in salable systems. Engineering is the art of making what you want from what you can get at a profit.

The challenge is not in building yet another board, but making a Forth which looks the same over a range of boards and includes drivers and protocol stacks for peripherals found in todays SoCs. Its not clear to me if this is the goal or not ? Is the best way to waste money building expensive boards, when the world is full of cheap ARM and other boards already. Or is the idea to build a Arduino-like Forth ecosystem ? Mike

The answer is YES. There are two issues with that. Duplicating the success of the Arduino will be no small task iin general. Many others are trying that exact same thing with limited success. The other is what exactly will set your boards apart? That is, if you want to have an Arduino like approach you have to have something that is different or better. Your goal is to promote Forth. I just don't see the connection to building yet another line of MCU cards. The Mecrisp project is going for the existing hardware. Why not work to support that? Riscy Pigness is another one that exists and can use more support. -- Rick

It should be signal - power - power - signal for balance and low cross talk. I have yet to see one built that way. I have looked. There are many other errors of this type on the Arduino stuff. It is obviously designed by amateurs. Now if you are just hacking around and don't need full capabilities - no problem. But if you are making something commercial the nits will eventually screw you. > >> Is the best way to waste money building expensive boards, when the world is full of cheap ARM and other boards already. > > >> > > >> Or is the idea to build a Arduino-like Forth ecosystem ? > > > > > > Very perceptive. Ok, NONE of what you have posted here has shown up in your Indigogo page. Your Indigogo page says it is all about promoting Forth. According to what you have posted here, it is about providing reliable, commercial, embedded hardware. If you want to have a successful project you need to be a salesman and a marketeer as well as an engineer. You need to have well defined goals and be able to fully explain them to your potential customers. You might want to address the differences in what you have posted here and what you posted on Indigogo. I hope you get your funding. btw, it would be really nice if you used something other than Google to access newsgroups. Google is rather disruptive to posting here. -- Rick

Rick gave good advice. You do an ok job of selling Forth on your indiegogo page, but that leaves the question, why the heck did you build the hardware when there are so many existing boards that can run the same Forth? Neither Rick or I could see any reason. Now you have finally told us: your hardware is better. That is something we can understand. But you made no attempt on indiegogo to get this point across, so we never figured it out. We know there are a lot of boards out there and we generally figure they are all about the same unless someone explains how they are different. Most of them are not Arduinos, by the way. If you update your indiegogo page to explain why your hardware is better than the existing stuff, it will make the project a lot easier to understand. My reaction to the page was "hey, another Forth, there's not so many of those, so great. And another ARM board: there's tons of those, so yawn". >> Google is rather disruptive to posting here. > Re: Google - what would you suggest? After all this is a Google group. No it's not a Google group--it's a Usenet group which some people access through a godawful Google web interface. The Google interface messes up the posts of people who use it, so they are messy and hard to read. You can get non-Google Usenet access for free at eternal-september.org . Others can probably give better suggestions than I can about what client software is best to use. The only thing I know is Google is the worst.
