The situation seems to be that it's clean and it works, but the slowdown
gets bad once there are lots of cores and lots of contention.  I've been
hearing of some improved approaches, but who knows.

[Some of] the Erlang guys have felt for a long while that shared memory
is ultimately doomed, as core counts increase and cache interlocks get
more and more complicated.  So they want to use message passing for
everything.  OTOH the current BEAM (Erlang) VM uses message passing for
small objects, but (limited) shared memory for certain large ones.
