When "1." is finally de-standardized and systems actually remove it,

The problem is newcomers writing, say "1." and expecting to get an FP
number. They silently get something else, and at some later point the
program visible does not expect as they expect. Yes, they did not
intend to use doubles, and yes, you write floats differently, but that
does not help them at all.
