My understanding is that the ESP8266 uses the Xtensa LX3 core from
Tensilica.  The instructions are usually 24 bits long, with some
additional 16-bit encodings if the "code density" option is enabled.
It's a typical regular load-store RISC instruction set, so in that sense
it resembles MIPS.
