Global variables are messy, especially in a recursive program like a
parser generator.  You typically have to save and restore them when
you change them in a definition.

No.  In Gray THIS is the top of the extra stack.

In Gray there is only one node under consideration at a time, that's
why the object-oriented part is designed as it is.  However, when
dealing with a node, one has to deal with it's children, so in some
sence there are more objects being accessed; this works by passing the
addresses of the other nodes to words that expect a node address,
e.g.:

 operand2 generate ;
