Christophe Lavarenne took the approach of always compiling.  That
resolves some of the state-smartness problems, but produces new
issues.  I only dimly remember what they are (mainly implementing
parsing words IIRC), but in any case, it seems that you cannot
eliminate the problem in this way, only push it around.
