Planning an in-house course on gnuplot. Trying to figure out if it makes
sense to wait until 4.8 is out.

The course is on windows (unfortunately). Will the 4.8 release on windows
feature QT as the default term?

Thanks in advance,

I think we will likely go directly to 5.0 as the next major release.
The policy has been that backwards compatibility is strictly maintained
within a release series if possible. Since the current development
tree has accumulated a number of non-backwards compatible changes,
that argues for calling it 5.0 when it is released.

I doubt it. But you can customize the default in your environment using
GNUTERM or in the initialization file instead.

Thank you,

Any idea about the timing of gnuplot 5.0?

My personal guesstimate:

Sep 2013	4.6.4
early 2014	1st beta-testing version of 5
Mar 2014	4.6.5
spring 2014	2nd beta-testing version of 5
Sep 2014	5.0

All dates subject to change and mischance.
In particular, if the initial beta testing of 5 goes well the
release of 5.0 might be pushed up to be in parallel to the last
release in the 4.6 series. Since the whole point of bumping the
major version number is that there will not be 100% backward
compatibility, I think it is reasonable to have a "final" version 4
release even if overlaps the timing on first release of 5.

In any event, this would be a really good time to speak up about any
major changes you would like to see considered for version 5.

Probably my top most wanted feature in gnuplot is to have full zoom/pan
functionality in multiplot mode across all the subplots.

Refer to python/matplotlib where you can share x and y axes between plots so
that a zoom/pan in one zooms/pans the subplots with shared axes as well.

Likely this requires the capabilities of Qt.

This may not be the easiest request. The background for it is in complex
geophysical well log plots where the depth scale zooming/panning should be
mirrored in sub plots each plotting a different variable (gamma ray, neutron
porosity, density, water saturation, resisitivity, NMR relaxation time etc.)

Alex van der Spek

Very likely this would require the

I think, similarly urgent addition (but maybe easier to implement) would
be a true 3D plotting (distant objects appear smaller than close ones),
like e.g. in IDL. This would not just be a nice feature but *very*
useful to help the user to recognize the spatial structure e.g. of the
positions of nearby stars or the "vast polar structure" in our Galactic
neighbourhood, recently published by Marcel Pawlowski.

Best wishes,

Ingo

Would it not be better to add a terminal for a true 3d-format like 3ds,
skp or VRML? Such plots could then be freely rotated in appropriate
programs and published on the internet. It would also be possible to
select the most informative viewing angle for 2d-printing.

Open source apps that are reliable any sufficiently widely spread are
indeed an interesting option. But the requirement of an external program
(unless being smoothly invoked) would disrupt the workflow in gnuplot.
These options should be judged by developers. My statement was simply
that non-perspective 3d is insuffient for many, if not most purposes.

Best wishes,

Ingo

Inspect please this project (GNU GPL):

scpovplot3d.sf.net

This is set of scripts for POVRay able to create both orthogonal
and perspective 3D data views (surface, histograms and so on..).

Alex, so can you just confirm please. The above feature is NOT currently available?

AND do you know of any tricks to accomplish it?

The only way to use the QT terminal is to compile gnuplot sources
yourself. This is true for both windows and linux. Follow the
instructions given on the website under building gnuplot from cvs sources.
