I think we will likely go directly to 5.0 as the next major release.
The policy has been that backwards compatibility is strictly maintained
within a release series if possible.  Since the current development
tree has accumulated a number of non-backwards compatible changes,
that argues for calling it 5.0 when it is released.

I doubt it.  But you can customize the default in your environment using
GNUTERM or in the initialization file instead.
